Pittsburgh Penguins Enter New 20-Year Naming Rights Agreement With PPG Paints After 8 Years as the Consol Energy Center and Two Stanley Cup Victories Over That Span

Announced Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins home rink will no longer be named the Consol Energy Center. Instead, the team has signed a new 20-year naming rights agreement and will now play at the PPG Paints Arena.

PPG Paints is a local Pittsburgh-based business obviously dealing in paint products. They’ve been around for over 130 years in the Pennsylvania area.

"PPG Chairman/CEO Michael McGarry via NHL.com,“We are proud to support the Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins and to invest in this important venue in our hometown,” McGarry continued. “On behalf of our customers, employees and business partners around the world, PPG sends a hearty, ‘Let’s Go Pens!’ cheer to the team and all of Pittsburgh.”"

During the Pittsburgh Penguins run under the name Consol Energy Center, as mentioned, they won two Stanley Cups Championships and never missed the playoffs during that eight-year period. They also finished either first or second in their division in each of those years except for a fourth-place finish in 2014-15.

The Pens accumulated a total record of 370 wins – 195 losses – 57 overtime losses since 2008-09 for 797 points – that’s an average of 99.63 points per season.

"David Morehouse, Penguins President via NHL.com,“We are excited to extend our partnership with PPG – a top-notch global organization that makes its home here in Pittsburgh,” said David Morehouse, Pittsburgh Penguins president. “We believe that the partnership will offer exciting opportunities for our fans, as well as engagement opportunities for PPG employees and customers.”"

It’s expected the arena previously known as “Consol Energy Center” will undergo a complete makeover in coming weeks.

This will include a new look for the exterior signage (see attached artist rendering in NHL.com article), as well as PPG Paints logos at fan entrances and on the roof. The logo will also make its way to center ice and along the boards.

PPG will reportedly also have a presence at the Pittsburgh Penguins practice facility, UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pennsylvania. In addition, both arenas should receive a nice upgrade with a spiffy paint job.
