Philadelphia Flyers Should Make a Trade With the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Philadelphia Flyers have basically eliminated themselves from playoff contention with a 10-game losing streak. But there’s someone in the playoffs who they should trade with – Pittsburgh.
The Philadelphia Flyers are a team who’s still rebuilding. They’re going to be sellers at the deadline, should they find the right partner. Somebody the Flyers haven’t considered and likely won’t is the interstate rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Which is a shame.
Why is that? The Philadelphia Flyers have a ferocious rivalry with the Penguins. The two teams hate each other. There’s a long history of that hatred. The fact that Jaromir Jagr became a Flyer at one point spoiled him in the eyes of some Penguins fans. But there’s a good trade for both teams that could be made.

The Penguins, in win-now mode, add some valuable depth in terms of a player who can be shaped into a great fourth line center. Meanwhile, the Flyers aren’t using Jordan Weal as often as fans would like. It’s leading to less playing time for a player who’s shown he can be productive.
On the flip side, the Flyers, who are still rebuilding, get a player in Dominik Simon who should eventually be able to do the fourth line center role himself and is already a better option than some of the players on the Flyers roster. If Simon doesn’t work out, the Flyers also get a fourth-round pick, which, if Hextall drafts well, will turn into something meaningful.
Weal has eight points in 24 games with the Flyers. With Pierre-Edouard Bellemare doing very well in Vegas, we’ve seen how well Flyers players transition to other teams. Weal gives the Penguins more depth at the center role either in front of or behind Riley Sheahan, and he’s a player the Penguins can afford at the deadline.

Simon is a player who’s racked up points in the AHL, and through five NHL games, has two assists. Last season, Simon had 46 points in 70 games in the AHL. This season, he has 16 in 20. While he’s not somebody who’s going to crack the Penguins’ roster full-time soon, he is a player who will do well on the NHL level. He’s only 23 and continues to produce. He’ll be somebody who can play defensively and still find ways to add assists.
