On Saturday in the National Hockey League we saw a couple of pretty ugly incidents between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins. It seems like these plays are becoming more and more commonplace in the game. The Department of Player Safety led by Brendan Shannahan has already had to rule on a multiple of illegal hits, and now two more will have to be reviewed and rulings will have to be made.Nov 23, 2013; Montreal, Quebec, CAN; Pittsburgh Penguins left wing James Neal (18) before the game against Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. For those that haven’t seen what happened check out these next couple videos.
The first is James Neal of the Pittsburgh Penguins kneeing Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins. At the upper part of the screen you will notice
Brad Marchand laying on the ice and as James Neal skates by he angles his knee right to the head of Marchand.
This next video is Shawn Thornton of the Boston Bruins knocking out Brooks Orpik of the Pittsburgh Penguins. This incident stems from a hit that Orpik placed on Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson. Thornton challenged Orpik to a fight but he declined to accept the challenge. So in the next scrum, Thornton trips up Orpik and with gloves on, punches Oripik in the face knocking him out.
Both players have meetings scheduled with the Department of Player Safety. Neal will have a phone hearing while Thornton will have an in person hearing at the NHL offices in New York.
