We were treated to an early (and grainy) look at the Washington Capitals Winter Classic logo when it leaked online late yesterday, but today we got a look at the full uniform they will wear against the Chicago Blackhawks on January 1st, 2015.
Prior to the leaks, many expected the Capitals to wear a red version of their current throwback. The red part was correct, but the jersey unveiled today is a completely new design for the Capitals:

It’s vintage, but thankfully does not use any vintage white! To me, I get a 1940’s AHL Cleveland Barons meets the New York Americans vibe from the uniform. It’s obviously patriotic, but doesn’t come off as a rejected Team USA design. One of the aspects of the logo that was not visible in the leaked images is the mid-point connection on the W forming the shape of the Washington Monument. This is also done on the points of the A’s in Capitals. This isn’t the first time that the Capitals have alluded to an iconic D.C. building in their logo: their “Weagle” alternate logo contains the Capital building in its negative space. Prior to the start of the live stream of the event, we were also given a better look at the official logo for the 2015 Winter Classic. The logo continues the theme of previous Winter Classic logos: a vintage look, the Winter Classic word mark, and a local landmark:
You can’t help but praise the Capitals for going with an original design, rather than simply putting out a red version of their existing throwback. That would have been the easiest option. This keeps with the vintage theme of the Winter Classic, but also has unique aspects that fit perfectly with the Washington Capitals.
