3. New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils need to surround Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes with better wings. Especially if they aren’t able to re-sign Kyle Palmieri. Even if they do re-sign him, the Devils need more wings who can score. “Wing who can score” is a perfect description of Patrik Laine.

Laine would be a great fit with the Devils. Lindy Ruff is a coach who likes structure. Maybe Laine would thrive under him. Even if he doesn’t, imagine Laine getting passes from Hughes. Sounds pretty awesome to me.

Now, about the cost. The Devils would have to include Damon Severson in the trade. He’d immediately join Winnipeg’s top-four, perhaps even their top pairing. Severson would be a significant upgrade over a good portion of the Jets’ blue line.

Next, the Jets would likely want a first round pick. Luckily, the Devils have three of them. They’re probably not trading the seventh overall selection, but the 18th overall selection (from the Coyotes) or the Canucks first-round pick (hasn’t been determined as of Sept. 2) could be in play.

Additionally, the Jets might want Pavel Zacha. He’s a center and with Bryan Little’s injury, the Jets need more centers. Zacha is a bottom-six center, but perhaps a change of scenery would be a good thing for him. Certainly wouldn’t hurt for the Jets to add another center.
