NHL free agency is nearly underway. Things will officially start on Oct. 9. That will be the start of the league’s new year. Though this offseason is coming three months later than everyone expected back in January, there should be a lot of movement and action to quench the thirst of fans.
It’ll be hard to keep track of everything, but here at Puck Prose, we live to serve you. We won’t grade every move, only the major ones.

Denis Malgin, an RFA, has signed a one-year contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs worth $700,000. Since his cap hit is so cheap, he could see some action in the NHL. These kinds of players are important for the Leafs. In 192 career games, Malgin has 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points.
Senators Sign Josh Brown

The Ottawa Senators have traded a fourth round pick for the RFA rights to former Florida Panthers defenseman Josh Brown. Brown has 10 points in 93 career games, all of them with the Panthers. He was drafted by Florida in the sixth round of the 2013 NHL Draft.
With the likely departures of Ron Hainsey and Marc Borowiecki, the Senators needed a bit of help on their blueline. Brown won’t be too costly and it’s worth noting he’s played for Sens head coach D.J. Smith before.
Sabres Sign Andrew Oglevie

Andrew Oglevie has signed a two-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres worth $750,000 annually. He played in 55 games for the Rochester Americans last year, putting up 29 points in the process. The Sabres are showing an impressive commitment to Rochester this year, which is a huge change from how they’ve dealt with them in recent years.
Brossoit Signed By Jets
Jets have signed Laurent Brossoit to a 1 year contract. $1.5 million.

Soucy Close To Deal With Wild

Brian Elliott is staying Philly. The backup goaltender signed a one-year extension worth $1.5 million.
Grade: B. Hard to hate this signing. Elliott works well with Carter Hart and he’s a quality backup.
Robin Lehner To Sign With Vegas
Goaltender Robin Lehner has put pen to paper and signed a 5-year, $25 million extension to stay with the Vegas @GoldenKnights. Announcement expected later today.

The deal that was allegedly done during the Stanley Cup Playoffs has finally been worked out. Great deal for Robin Lehner, who gets a well-deserved long-term deal. He’s been looking for one for far too long. Vegas gets great value here too. One has to wonder what’s up with Marc-Andre Fleury now, though. Is his time with the Golden Knights over?
Grade: A. Love this for Lehner and Vegas. Match made in heaven. May the “Kung Fu Panda” goalie enjoy his time in Sin City!
Penguins Re-Sign Tristan Jarry
The Penguins have re-signed goaltender Tristan Jarry to a three-year contract.

The contract will run through the 2022.23 season and carry an average annual value of $3.5 million.

Grade: B+. Good contract for both sides. This likely means Matt Murray’s days with the Penguins are over. The writing has been on the wall for a while, but this confirms it.
