Before turning to the headlines, as per usual, we highlight the performers of the previous night. Sunday is typically a quiet day in the NHL, and such was the case in the first one of the new season with only three games on the schedule.

The New York Islanders squeezed out a win in overtime against Anaheim off a beautiful Josh Bailey goal. Buffalo walked into Edmonton and dominated from start-to-finish with a commanding 6-2 victory. In the late game, Vancouver fought back from an early deficit to force overtime. Brandon Sutter scored early into extra time to give the Canucks a 4-3 win over Carolina.
