Day one of the World Juniors kicked off today, and to say the least, every game was amazing. While some teams got blown out score wise, they were still very entertaining to watch. The Czech’s surprised everyone with a defeat over the reigning Gold Medal Champions from Finland. While Canada and Russia renewed an old rivalry in a fierce game that was very close.
The other two games from Monday weren’t fairly close, though, with the United States thumping Latvia. And Sweden showing off why they are potential threats with a huge win over Denmark.

Top Forward of the Day: Mathew Barzal (CAN) – (1G, 2A, 3PTS)
Out of the five returnee’s, Mathew Barzal had himself a solid day. Registering three points, two of which were beautiful passes to forward Dylan Strome on the power-play. He also had himself another power-play point when he scored a goal himself after receiving a pass from forward Pierre-Luc Dubois.
Top Defenseman of the Day: Rasmus Dahlin (SWE) – (1G, 1A, 2PTS)
The only player in the tournament that was born in 2000, Rasmus Dahlin is already being considered a number one overall pick in the 2018 draft, and today he showed why. He and the rest of team Sweden absolutely dominated Denmark with their speed and skill.
Top Goalie of the Day: Jakub Skarek (CZE) – (1W, .956SV%, 1.00GAA)
The closest game all day came between last year’s Gold Medal winners in team Finland and the Czech Republic. In a winning cause, goaltender Jakub Skarek posted amazing numbers, which are tops of all the goalies who have played so far. If Finland didn’t score in the middle of the first period, he would have walked away with the first shutout of the tournament since the Czech’s were able to shut down the team for the rest of the game.

Today’s games feature some great match-ups. The Czech Republic has a chance to extend their winning streak as they face Switzerland who will be playing their first game. Russia and Latvia will have shots at redeeming themselves since they’re both coming off loses, same goes for Finland and Denmark. And to finish off the night Canada has a chance to continue their winning streak as well when they face Slovakia.
