Hockey Rock!: A Guide to Game Music (Part 2)

Alright – so you’ve already downloaded all 35 songs in part one of this piece… and now you want more music to get you pumped and ready for the next NHL (or any league) game? Well, here we go then.

1. Don’t Stop Me Now, Queen: Alright, I promise this is the last Queen song you’ll find on these playlists. It’s just a great one – and it was used quite frequently during the Wings’ Stanley Cup years of the ’90s.

2. I Like to Move It, Reel 2 Real: You’ve probably heard this one at some hockey games… and let’s face it, it makes you want to, well…. move it!

3. The Anthems: One of my personal favorite parts of any hockey game is hearing the anthems sung prior to the puck drop. In Buffalo – my hometown – we’re lucky enough to always hear both the Canadian and U.S. anthems, and it never gets old.

4. Hit The Road Jack, Ray Charles: You may not hear this song at hockey games as much anymore as in the past, but feel free to break out into song whenever a player from the opposing team gets tossed out of the game (or just to the penalty box).

5. Ole, Bouncing Souls: This is quite possibly one of the most annoying songs ON THE PLANET – but it’s also catchy, and I can’t help but sing along. Even if it is a soccer song. *sigh*

6. Dream On, Aerosmith: Could this be construed as a sad song? Yes, but it can also be inspirational. Dream until your dreams come true; especially if that dream is Lord Stanley’s Cup.

7. Canadian Gold, Hockey Night in Canada: This is the ‘new’ theme to HNIC. While it may not be as catchy or warm as the historical theme, it’s caught my attention, enough so to add it to my playlist.

8. Song 2, Blur: WOO-HOO.

9. 50 Mission Cap, Tragically Hip: This song has to be included on the playlist; it’s a tribute to Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko, who – as the song says – disappeared shortly after winning the Stanley Cup. The plane he had been on was found eleven years ago, in 1962, and that’s when he was finally laid to rest.

10. La La La Luongo, Parksy’s Corner: Whether you’re a fan of the Canucks netminder or not, I think you’ll find this song pretty catchy and hard to deny. Just don’t start singing it in front of any Bruins fans…..

11. The State of Hockey, Minnesota Wild: “The game’s in our blood and our blood’s in the game.” Enough said.

12. I Am Canadian, unknown: I really have no excuse for why this is on the playlist… I actually have no idea how I even found this one, and I’m not actually Canadian but I’ll be damned if it isn’t a great song.

13. Beautiful, Flickerstick: A song that’s been used in intro videos for several NHL teams in the past.

14. We Love The Hawks, The Retar Crew: Even if you don’t actually love the Hawks, this fan-made song (accompanied by video, at the link) is a gem. It’s a bit dated – including a mention of Niemi when he was with Chicago – but who cares?

15. Better Days, Goo Goo Dolls: Because I’m a Sabres fan, this song will always make me think of an old intro video from the playoffs a few years back. Either way, it makes me cry and gets me through the times when my team may not be doing so great.
