Could Martin Brodeur Play For His Hometown Canadiens After Trade

Is there a possibility that three time Stanley Cup champion Martin Brodeur may find a seat on the bench of the Montreal Canadiens? Could he ride shotgun to one of today’s elite goaltenders, Carey Price? It certainly is not out of the realm of acceptance. Though this debate has gone back and forth, you certainly can’t rule out the “what if”?

On Sunday, the Canadiens dealt their backup goaltender Peter Budaj and Patrick Holland to the Winnipeg Jets for Eric Tangredi. Budaj has served as the backup to Price the past three years.  For more details of the trade between the Candadiens and Jets, you may read NHL.com by clicking here.

In that time, he’s had a front row seat to the brilliant play of Price. And for the most part, he has played as well as Price when called upon.  Unfortunately, with the emergence of Dustin Tokarski, it may have caused Budaj to be expendable.

Now that the veteran backup is out of the picture, it appears to be a battery of Price and Tokarski entering the 2014-2015 NHL season. However, there is the curious case of Brodeur.

Last season, he played in 36 games, compiling a record of 19-14-6 with a .901 save percentage and 3 shutouts.  Not too shabby for a 42 year old.  He did share the lime light with Cory Schneider, who has taken over the reigns as the New Jersey Devils starting goalie.

  • This whole offseason, Brodeur has been standing by for a call from an NHL team in need of his services. Being a native of Montreal, Canada, you would think this would be the storybook to one of the game’s greats.  A definite first ballot candidate for the Hall of Fame,   Brodeur has accomplished so much in terms of North American and International hockey in his 22 years between the pipes.

In an article published on the Canadian website sunnewsnetwork.ca, Brodeur would welcome the opportunity:

"“If the Canadiens made me an offer, it goes without saying that I would listen to what they have to offer me…(But) This is Carey Price’s team…”"

Imagine the Canadien Belle Centre erupting as the introduction of their native son Martin Broduer has come home. It could rival cheers of other great Canadiens goaltenders such as Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy.

This year, the Canadiens will be one of the teams vying for the Eastern Conference Title. Why not enlist a viable backup who is a proven starting goaltender that is willing to take a backseat to the present all for the sake of hoisting the Stanley Cup over his head one more time, all while having fun in the process?

Well, Brodeur is waiting by the phone. According to sports.yahoo.com, you can find him with his son, Anthony, conditioning himself with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL. Waiting for his chance when called upon…
