Sidney Crosby Missed The All Star Weekend; Get Over It
The NHL All Star game was a success by some people measurement, but one star player chooses to sit him. Sidney Crosby missed the event due to an injury and for some reason NHL fans wanted to call him out for his no-show. As much as I dislike Crosby; I couldn’t care less if he needed to stay home and recover or just go fishing. At some point we all need to remember that players have lives outside the game, and at some point fans need to understand that these players do their fair share of charity.
Let’s all be honest, the NHL All Star Weekend did not need Sidney Crosby. It did not need another player in the spot light, and while NHL players are made to

believe it’s a great honor to skate in the All Star game it his life. The lower-body injury that was reported on January 22nd should have been enough for fans and the NHL to say its okay; we understand. But, no the media and fans alike took it like a slap in the face, and a suspension was handed down.
Maybe Adam Proteau of The Hockey New said it best. “Who do we think we are, and when did we decide a star’s every waking moment was going to be ours? Why do some of us think there’s a string to be pulled in each player’s back, and all we need to do is stretch that string back, let it snap into place between his shoulder blades, and sit back as they perform for our enjoyment?” NHL players as a whole are forced to make public appearances and show up for everything under the sun. Why is it so bad if they finally just say no?
The NHL just piles on events and games, and it never stops. This league like many others has become a “FTM” Follow The Money league and the players are being used as nothing more than a product to fatten the back accounts of owners.
This is not about Crosby the players; it’s about Sidney Crosby the person, and if injured or just because his body needed a break it’s not a big deal that he sat out the weekend. If he was forced to make the trip to Columbus fans would have had the pleasure of seeing a half hearted Sidney Crosby; than we would hear all about how he could have embraced the weekend better.
If a player needs a break a player needs a break and if risking suspension or losing some money doesn’t matter to them why should we all get so mad? After all we are really talking about a game.
Maybe if fans and the NHL started to treat players like real people sports and hockey would be a better culture. Putting a player like Sidney Crosby on a pedestal just because they are beyond talented on the ice is one of the biggest problems I see in the NHL.
