Boston Bruins News: Surging Forward in March
It’s no secret that February for the Boston Bruins was tough. Boston struggled as a team losing both Kevan Miller and David Krejci to significant injuries and for a large period of the remainder of the season.
This led to doubt from a majority of the fan base about the team’s playoff hopes, especially after Peter Chiarelli signed both Brett Connolly and Max Talbot on the day of the trade deadline. The season appeared to look as if it was plummeting quickly as Connolly got injured just in his second practice with the club and

The game against the Flyers had a playoff sort of feel. The Black and Gold topped them by a score of 3-2. The game wasn’t exceptionally pretty by any means, but it was two points and kept them ahead of both Florida and Philadelphia in the wild card standings. The Bruins were down with 15 seconds to go in the game before Brad Marchand capitalized after Tuukka Rask was pulled and pushed the Bruins into overtime. It was Marchand who won it for the Bruins not too long into overtime as well.
Next up on the Bruins schedule came the Red Wings. The Bruins shined in the midday matinee matchup and bested Detroit by a final score of 5-3. Svedberg was in between the pipes for the Bruins, and proved that he was capable of securing a win. The B’s scored twice on their power play and Daniel Paille scored twice. The win proved that the Bruins were not going to sit back on their heels against one of the top rated power plays, as they overpowered Detroit.
The fourth game that has been played so far this month was against the scorching hot Senators. The Bruins set the tone early on as it was Ryan Spooner who scored in front of his hometown family and friends twice who were in attendance during the affair. Loui Eriksson also had a highlight reel goal that helped push the Bruins ahead of the Senators on Tuukka Rask’s 28th birthday as they bested Ottawa by a score of 3-1.
The wins seem to be coming at the perfect time for the Bruins as they have begun to streak forward. Rask has been on form since the beginning of January and has been waiting for the rest of the team to keep up with him. Now they have.
Brad Marchand is continuously proving his importance as he’s leading the team in scoring with 22 goals at the moment. He’s came through in crucial games. Marchand is the player that 29 teams love to hate in the NHL, but only one loves to have: the Bruins. He is not only talented but has proven time and time again that he is capable of getting under the opponent’s skin and able to be productive at the same time.

The acquisition of Max Talbot has been big as well. Talbot has given the fourth line a newfound spark of energy and exuberance that hasn’t been seen in quite a while. He’s boosted them forward. For the first time in many weeks, Claude Julien has all 4 lines rolling and beginning to produce. Daniel Paille has begun to make a bigger impact and coming through with big goals.
Despite the injuries, the Bruins seemed to have found an answer for their first line as they’ved placed rookies Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak with Milan Lucic. The three have found chemistry. The rookies have begun to shine as their confidence has grown. Spooner has scored three goals, with one being a huge game winner in overtime.
There is one concern however. The fact that Carl Soderberg hasn’t scored a goal since January has raised a few eyebrows. But, other players have been stepping up in his scoring absence and the team has been succeeding without him producing goals. He’s still been a productive player on his line.
Winning three straight games for the Bruins is no answer for the remainder of the season. The Bruins have a tough schedule on the road ahead beginning with the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Garden. Following the game against the Bolts, the Bruins will travel to the Steel City to face the Penguins then it’s onto the Caps.
The Bruins have set a positive vibe for what looks to be a promising month. It is time to keep it up and remain in playoff contention. The schedule is only about to get more and more difficult, and the games will get tougher. Many teams are battling for a playoff spot. A streaking Bruins team that continues to get big wins is what is needed if they want to continue on a playoff push. It’s going to take a lot of effort, but if there’s one team that’s used to facing diversity and overcoming challenges it’s the Boston Bruins who can do it.
