Flyers D Shayne Gostisbehere: 15 Game Point Streak Snapped

They say all good things must come to an end, right? Last night, Philadelphia Flyers D Shayne Gostisbehere’s 15 game point streak ended. In a must win game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Flyers fell short and Cam Ward stole the show as the Hurricanes went on to win 3-1 at PNC Arena.

Ghost’s 15 game streak which included five goals and 13 assists is officially the longest in National Hockey League history for a rookie defensemen and the third longest in the Flyers organization. Flyers fans and fans of Ghost in general feel bittersweet about the streak coming to a close. Gostisbehere on the other hand, “I’m personally happy it’s over.” The rookie who’s tremendous play has been such a valuable asset to the Flyers, has all eyes on a push for the playoffs.

His streak is something to be proud of and has set him apart from other rookies this season. The 15 game point streak has also given him an impressive case for the Calder Trophy. The impact that Flyers D Shayne Gostisbehere has on the ice alone is big enough reason to be in the Calder conversation. He scored goals in crucial moments for the orange and black (remember the OT thriller in Toronto) and he stepped up in a way that is unexpected for a rookie. That’s because Shayne isn’t playing like a rookie, but rather as a seasoned veteran.

Flyers D Shayne Gostisbehere’s impact on the Flyers has been noticeable since his call up from the AHL on November 14th, 2015. It was one of GM Ron Hextall‘s best moves all season. Bouncing back from an ACL injury last year that many thought would sideline him for longer than it actually did. Gostisbehere made strides of improvement and showed he was NHL ready. Although the Flyers playoff chances unfortunately dwindle every day, Ghost Bear gives the city of Brotherly Love something to be proud of and hope for the future.

Even though his streak is a reflection of his individual play, Ghost could not have done it without his teammates and coaches. “I really can’t thank my teammates enough, and most importantly my coaches helped me along the way not letting me think about it too much, and the biggest thing, not getting a big head about it.” Ghost Bear was the big buzz in the NHL from January 9th to February 23rd but the streak could not have continued if it weren’t for his teammates such as Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek or Brayden Schenn feeding him the puck.

At only 22, Gostisbehere has made his mark on the NHL or at least in the Philadelphia Flyers organization. 53 on the blueline isn’t going anywhere, he is the foundation of the future Flyers. The streak may be over, but this is just the beginning for Shayne Gostisbehere’s career in the NHL.
