Buffalo Sabres Forward Ryan O’Reilly Escapes Trouble, Has Criminal Charges Dropped

Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O’Reilly received good news on Monday as criminal charges stemming from an impaired driving accident last summer were dropped.

His agent Pat Morris told the Associated Press that Canadian Prosecutors were forced to drop the charges of impaired driving/failing to remain at the scene of a crime due to insufficient evidence in the case.

The London Free-Press first reported the charges being dropped.

Police said a green pickup truck was driven into the side of a Tim Hortons restaurant in Lucan, Ontario, north of London, around 4 a.m. on July 9, 2015, before driving away.

Ryan O’Reilly, 25, was originally selected by the Colorado Avalanche 33rd overall (2nd round) back in 2009 from OHL’s Erie Otters.

Leading into his draft year, Ryan wore the “C” for eventual Champion Team Canada at the U18 Ivan Hlinka tournament. He was also named to the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2008-09.

O’Reilly made his NHL debut in 2009-10 posting 26 points in 81 games as a rookie. A year later in 2010-11, Ryan matched his previous year point total, but only played 74 games. It wasn’t until 2011-12 when O’Reilly had a breakout year scoring 18 goals (55 points) in 81 games.

In 2012-13, the Avs and O’Reilly began their contract squabble. Calgary tried to swoop in with an offer sheet, not realizing that because Ryan played past a certain date in the KHL, that he would need to clear waivers. Luckily for the Flames, Colorado quickly matched the offer.

The rocky relationship continued for two more years as O’Reilly continued to produce at a high level. He posted 28 goals (64 points) in 2013-14, adding 55 points in 2014-15.

Pouncing on the opportunity to acquire the star playmaker last summer, Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray was able to add Ryan O’Reilly for the affordable price of Mikhail Grigorenko and Nikita Zadorov (among other pieces).

It paid dividends in year one as Ryan scored 21 goals (60 points) in 71 games.

Buffalo Sabres F Ryan O’Reilly has also made four Team Canada World Hockey Championship appearances early in his career. He has 26 points in 35 international games over that span.
