NHL Power Rankings (Heading into Week 11) – Someone finally dethrones Pittsburgh of top spot, Minnesota climbs seven spots following a perfect 3-0-0 week, Boston drops six positions after a tough three-game stretch, and Colorado sinks to the basement once again

Welcome back to our weekly NHL power rankings here at Puck Prose. This a duel collaboration between Matt Duscharme and Ryan Ritchie brought to you every Thursday in which we update fans on the latest happenings around the league. In addition to our top 30 rankings, we provide in-depth analysis and feature a weekly prospect profile to help fans get better acquainted with young talent in the system.

We’ve seen plenty of movement in this week’s rankings. After two straight weeks at number one, the Pittsburgh Penguins were surpassed by a team that will occupy the no.1 position for the first time in 2016-17. Several teams had perfect (or near perfect) records and jumped several spots, including Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Ottawa (among others). A light schedule or sloppy week saw a few teams fall, including Colorado, Detroit, Boston, and Winnipeg.

On a bit of a side note, we’d like to announce that we will be skipping the week 12 power rankings due to the NHL schedule. With three games off between December 24th-26th, few teams will have played more than a single game. We’ll be back on January 5th as we head into week 13 of the 2016-17 season.

*all stats in our week 11 NHL power rankings are heading into Thursday (Dec.22) night’s action.

Top Goaltender: Semyon Varlamov (6 wins 3.15GAA .906 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Matt Duchene (3gp 0g 2a 2pts)

Colorado had a terrible week 10, to say the least, they didn’t win a single game and only five players got on the scoresheet. And out of those five players, only one reached two points. However, there was one bright spot.

The only bright spot from week 10 for Colorado was the fact that in his only game started, Semyon Varlamov had some decent numbers. He posted a .939 save percentage and a 2.05 goals-against-average. Things, however, will need to be tightened up in week 11 so Colorado doesn’t continue to fall in the standings. And games against Toronto, Chicago, and Calgary won’t make things easy. But in all regards, if scoring returns to form and Varlamov continues his solid play, they should very well gather a win or two.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F A.J. Greer, San Antonio (AHL)

2016-17 stats:

Not the average power forward, A.J. Greer can also skate very well and has great offensive instincts. His skating and agility can help him move around the ice very well which also helps him transition in play without much issue.

Top Rookie: Christian Dvorak (29gp 3g 8a 11pts)
Top Goaltender: Mike Smith (7 wins 2.67GAA .926 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Christian Dvorak (4gp 1g 2a 3pts)

Arizona’s week 10 didn’t quite go as planned, posting a record of 1-3-0 and scoring being quite stagnant as well. Only three Coyotes registered three points on the week and goalie Mike Smith appeared in all four games, but despite the record he had some decent numbers.

So back to Mike Smith, even though he played in all four games, he did collect himself a win on the week and posted a respectable .911 save percentage and a 2.75 goals-against-average. Rookie Christian Dvorak, as well as veterans Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Radim Vrbata, combined for nine points on the week with a combined minus one rating. Arizona is the most inexperienced team in the league so weeks like these are expected. But if they do want to win some games, the offense needs to stay consistent and goaltending needs to be up to par on a weekly basis. And week 11 is a good start since they have games against Toronto and Dallas. They did get the win last week against Toronto so they may be able to do it again, however, the Dallas game is going to be much tougher for the young club.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Kyle Capobianco, Sudbury (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 31gp 6g 16a 22pts

Kyle Capobianco has a plethora of talent, he was expected to make the Team Canada World Junior roster but unfortunately, he didn’t. Regardless, his passing skills are still top notch as well as his skating, often making him the go-to man on the power play. But he’s also great defensively, often making a smart decision as soon as he has the puck and the ability to anticipate plays and shut down passing lanes. He’s got the potential to become a future top-four defenseman in the NHL.

Top Rookie: Troy Stecher (24gp 1g 8a 9pts)
Top Goaltender: Jacob Markstrom (7 wins 2.63GAA .908 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Bo Horvat (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)

Vancouver had a surprising week to say the least, getting wins over Tampa Bay and Winnipeg was great for the team. What else was outstanding for the struggling Canucks is they managed to take the red-hot Blue Jackets to over despite the loss.

Jacob Markstrom was brilliant all week and making things very hard or easy depending on how you look at things on who the new owner of the net should be. He only played in one game but he did gather a win and a .969 save percentage with a 1.00 goals-against-average. While Bo Horvat scored four points in three games as well as being a plus four. Jannik Hansen, Sven Baertschi, Henrik Sedin combined for nine points and a plus-nine rating. Hopefully, these are signs of things to come and they can continue to carry the momentum into week 11, because they do have games against Winnipeg, Calgary, and Los Angeles.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Jake Virtanen, Utica (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 16gp 4g 2a 6pts

While playing in 10 games for Vancouver this year and majority of last year, Jake Virtanen is still one of the Canucks top prospects. He’s what you’d expect from a power forward, he loves to make his presence known on the ice and loves to take the body anytime he can. He’s also very quick and can move around the opposition just as easily as he can go through them.

Top Rookie: Anthony Beauvillier (23gp 3g 5a 8pts)
Top Goaltender: Jaroslav Halak (5-8-5 3.13GAA .907 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Anders Lee (3gp 4g 1a 5pts)

The New York Islanders underwhelmed once again last week. They had a big opportunity to pick up points with four games on the schedule and walked away with a measly three points after going 1-2-1. Their lone win came against Boston thanks to a rare sloppy outing by Bruins starter Tuukka Rask. Backup Anton Khudobin stepped up in relief and stopped 15 of 16 shots over the last 32 minutes.

If you’re looking for reasons why the Isles continue to sputter, just look at their penalty kill over that four-game stretch. They went 4-for-11 and watched their PK efficiency plummet from 81.4 percent to 78.7 percent.

Only one skater stood out the past week, and no it wasn’t John Tavares. In fact, he had a quiet four games recording just a single assist. The standout was Anders Lee, who took home player of the week honors for a second straight week. He has seven goals, three assists (10 points) over his last 10 games.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Kieffer Bellows, Boston U (NCAA)

2016-17 stats:15gp 4g 2a 6pts

I thought the Isles might reach a bit to select the son of Bridgeport head coach Brent Thompson (Tage). Instead, they jumped on the opportunity to take a young man who was projected to be a top 10 pick by some. Kieffer is the son of former NHLer Brian Bellows and has serious top-six potential. He just began his NCAA career with Boston University and will represent Team USA at the World Juniors.

Top Defenseman: Morgan Rielly (31gp 1g 14a 15pts)
Top Rookie: Auston Matthews (31gp 15g 9a 24pts)
Top Goaltender: Frederik Andersen (12-8-6 2.65GAA .918 save percentage)

Player of the Week: G Frederik Andersen (1 win 1.96GAA .935 save percentage)

Toronto had a rough week going 0-1-2 with losses to Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Anaheim. For those folks who had the possibility of playoffs in mind, these are tough games to swallow. Let’s not forget something though, this is a rebuilding team. If we rewind to the start of the season, the keywords or keyphrases were things like development or improvement. Fans just needed to see signs that things are headed in the right direction. If you can keep a level head like that, then 2016-17 has been a success. The rookies are shining and Frederik Andersen is starting to find his groove after a very slow start.

Speaking of Andersen, he was arguably the Leafs top player over the past week. He had a 1.96GAA and .935 save percentage stopping 86 of 92 shots. Frederik Andersen has now allowed two or fewer goals in five of his last seven starts.

Not many skaters managed to find the scoresheet with only six goals total. Rookie Auston Matthews had a pair of those, while Nazem Kadri, Jake Gardiner, Mitch Marner, and Nikita Zaitsev supplied the other four. Marner also had a pair of helpers, giving him 23 points on the year (just a point behind Matthews).

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Carl Grundstrom, Frolunda (SHL)

2016-17 stats:27gp 11g 2a 13pts

Selected 57th overall in 2016, Grundstrom joins a pair of Sabres prospects (Nylander and Asplund) as returnees to Team Sweden. Carl is set to wear the “A” and should see top minutes at the World Juniors. The thing I remember about Grundstrom that I loved most was that he plays a Canadian brand of hockey with that perfect mix of skill and physicality. Leafs may have snagged a gem here.

Top Defenseman: Justin Faulk (28gp 5g 8a 13pts)
Top Rookie: Sebastian Aho (31gp 5g 11a 16pts)
Top Goaltender: Cam Ward (10-8-6 2.30GAA .915 save percentage)

Player of the Week: G Cam Ward (1 win 1.85GAA .920 save percentage)

Carolina only had three games scheduled this past week and saw one of them postponed due to ice issues at PNC Arena. They began the week with a 4-3 shootout loss to Washington, followed by a 2-1 shootout win at home versus Buffalo.

Cam Ward started both games for the Canes and was easily their top performer over that short stretch. He surrendered three goals on 26 shots versus Washington, followed by stopping 23 of 24 shots in the win against Buffalo. After a slow start in 2016-17, Ward is looking impressive of late. He now has 10 wins, a 2.30GAA, and .915 save percentage. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big Cam Ward fan. I became very attached to this team for many years because of him and Eric Staal. Unfortunately, between injury concerns and inconsistent play over long stretches, it’s difficult to trust Ward anymore. If he can get a little more support from Eddie Lack to take a bit of the load off his shoulders, then Carolina has a winning recipe.

Since we’re only dealing with a pair of games and a total of four goals scored, not too many skaters stood out. The only two that recorded more than a single point were Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho. Teravainen was a ghost back in October, but is looking much better of late. He now has five points in his last eight games. Rookie Sebastian Aho is also finding the scoresheet with a bit more frequency of late. He also has five points in his last eight games, giving him 16 points in 31 games so far. If he can find another gear, he may be able to throw his name in the hat for Calder Trophy consideration.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Julien Gauthier, Val-d’Or (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 23gp 7g 20a 27pts

Heading into 2015-16, Gauthier was largely regarded as a top-10 pick. He had a mediocre season in the Q, which included a disappointing showing with Team Canada at the WJC. The Canes used their second pick of the first round to snag this explosive power forward. Julien will have another shot to make an impression as he plays for Team Canada once again at the World Juniors.

Top Goaltender: Cory Schneider (9-10-5 2.93GAA .904 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Adam Henrique (4gp 1g 2a 3pts)

Devils starter Cory Schneider continues to struggle, which is very troublesome. After coming out of the gates hot back in October, his play has fallen off the map since November. He had a .893 save percentage in 10 starts back in November, and currently has a .881 save percentage after seven starts in December. Put it this way, the last time Cory only allowed one or fewer goals in a single game: November 15th. Since then, he has allowed four or more goals in seven of 12 starts. You’ve gotta wonder whether something is going on because this just isn’t the same Cory Schneider we’ve come to know.

Looking at the team as a whole, New Jersey continues to struggle and sputter along. They went 0-2-1 over the last week with losses to Ottawa, NY Rangers, and Nashville.

A few players had a decent week for NJ. Henrique takes back-to-back POW honors with three points once again. Adam now has seven points in his last 10 games. Kyle Palmieri had a strong showing after his slow start. He racked up three helpers, giving him 16 points in 30 games.

Once thought to be a team that could compete in the tough Metropolitan Division, it’s starting to look like New Jersey is destined for the Draft Lottery again. That’s alright, they’ve got a plethora of young talent in their system and things are looking up for the Devils.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Brandon Gignac, Shawinigan (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats:24gp 7g 18a 25pts

Brandon was selected 80th overall (3rd round) in 2016 after a 61-point season in the Q. Gignac isn’t a flashy player but owns a solid offensive skill-set. Best regarded as a playmaker, Brandon has a high hockey IQ and knows how to get in the right places. This 19-year-old has serious NHL potential.

Top Goaltender: Connor Hellebuyck (12 wins 2.68GAA .910 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Patrik Laine (3gp 1g 3a 4pts)

If Vancouver didn’t take the win Tuesday night, Winnipeg would have gone undefeated in week 10. However, Patrik Laine was still hot all week posting four points in three games.

Speaking of Patrik Laine, how dynamite has this kid been? It’s safe to say those Alexander Ovechkin comparisons are true cause the only thing this kid does is score goals. Connor Hellebuyck was also solid on the week playing in all three games collecting a .926 save percentage and a 2.28 goals-against-average. Forward Blake Wheeler also had a great week posting three points in three games as well as defenseman Dustin Byfuglien doing the exact same. Week 11, however, should be a 50/50 week for the Jets as they have games against the Canucks and Blackhawks.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Ivan Telegin, CSKA (KHL)

2016-17 stats: 27gp 1g 5a 6pts

Ivan Telegin isn’t a flashy offensive player, but what he does do very well is use his body to his advantage. For instance taking and making hits to create chances for his team, he also has a nose for the net and isn’t afraid to stand in front of it in hopes to tip in a goal or screen the goaltender to let one in.

Top Goaltender: Antti Niemi (7 wins 2.85GAA .911 save percentage)

Player of the Week: G Antti Niemi (1 win 1.66GAA .940 save percentage)

Dallas posted a perfect .500 record on the week going 1-1-1, while they said week could have been better, they did however snap Philadelphia’s winning streak.

Jason Spezza, Radek Faksa, and John Klingberg all scored two points on the week while being a combined minus-four. So things up front weren’t necessarily outstanding, but goaltending was somewhat okay. Antti Niemi played in all three games collecting the 1-1-1 record while posting a great .940 save percentage and a 1.66 goals-against-average. So if scoring steps up and goaltending remains the same, Dallas will have a good week 11. But games against Los Angeles and Arizona may prove difficult for the club, but in all rights, Dallas should get the win in Arizona.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Riley Tufte, U of Minnesota (NCAA)

2016-17 stats: 14gp 0g 0a 0pts

A rare combination of size and skill, Riley Tufte can literally do it all on the ice. His passing is outstanding as well as his hitting and skating. However, he’s still a year or two away from full-time NHL ice time, but when he’s in the NHL, he’ll easily be a top six forward for the Stars.

Player of the Week: D Rasmus Ristolainen (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)

Sabres fans love to throw jobs at their netminders, but once again, it was the goaltending that bailed them out (in a sense). Sure, 1-0-2 this past week, but they managed to squeeze a point out of each contest. If it weren’t for Robin Lehner and Anders Nilsson, that might not have been possible.

Anders got a single start versus Carolina and continued his impressive play stopping 21 of 22 shots. He now has a 2.22GAA and .933 save percentage in 2016-17. Lehner received the other two starts. He stopped 33 of 35 shots for the lone win versus the Islanders. On Tuesday, Robin allowed three goals on 39 shots, but looked sharp in the process.

A few skaters managed to have a good week on the scoresheet. Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen continued his recent tear with four points in three games. The Finnish defender is starting to pile up the points now with 12 over his last 10 contests. Evander Kane also had a solid three-game stretch recording a single point in each game. Kane is also on a bit of a tear lately with eight points in his last 10 games.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Rasmus Asplund, Farjestad (SHL)

2016-17 stats: 25gp 3g 8a 11pts

It was a bit of a surprise to see Rasmus Asplund fall outside of the first round. He had a solid showing for Team Sweden at last year’s World Juniors and should once again be a driving force alongside another Sabres prospect, Alex Nylander. Known as a solid two-way center, Rasmus has a lot of potential.

Top Goaltender: Roberto Luongo (11-9-3 2.42GAA .918 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Aleksander Barkov (3gp 2g 3a 5pts)

If it weren’t for the power play, Florida may have easily walked away with only two points in their three games the past week. Luckily, they managed to go 4-for-9, with three of those coming against Winnipeg in a shootout loss and the other one coming in a close 4-3 win over Buffalo. Needless to say, the PP helped Florida get three of those five points.

The Panthers received a big boost from several skaters. Future Hall-of-Famer Jaromir Jagr notched four assists, tying him for second all-time on the NHL points list with Mark Messier. Star center Aleksander Barkov also had a big week with five points in three games. His recent surge gives him nine points over his last 10 games. Winger Reilly Smith had a decent week with three points, bringing him up to 14 in 2016-17. Even Nick Bjugstad joined the party tallying his first (and second) point of the year. With two points in his last three games, it may be a sign of things to come after shaking off the rust from a season-opening injury.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Riley Stillman, Oshawa (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 29gp 6g 14a 20pts

Riley Stillman is the son of longtime NHL forward Cory Stillman. Selected 114th overall in 2016, Riley is a solid two-way defenseman. At 6’1 190lbs, he doesn’t mind throwing the body or mixing it up and he’s a strong defensive presence. He also has an offensive side to his game that continues to develop as he sits just a point shy of his 21-points in 2015-16 in less than half the games played already.

Top Goaltender: John Gibson (11 wins 2.66GAA .908 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Rickard Rakell (4gp 3g 1a 4pts)

Anaheim had a .500 week last week posting a record of 2-2-0. Rickard Rakell and Cam Fowler each had themselves four point weeks. While gaining wins against Boston and Toronto, they did lose to Detroit and Montreal however.

Speaking of Anaheim’s offense, Rakell and Fowler combined for eight points despite being a combined minus-four. Thing’s didn’t stop there for the Ducks as Andrew Cogliano, Ryan Getzlaf, Sami Vatanen, and Ryan Kesler all combined for 12 points. And while Jonathan Bernier started three games this week, John Gibson posted the better numbers in the two games he played (one of which he took over from Bernier). Week 11 should be quite up and down for the Ducks since they have a game in Ottawa and then in San Jose. Both games should be a challenge, but Anaheim could very well get two if not all four points out of the week.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Julius Nattinen, Windsor (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 22gp 5g 16a 21pts

Julius Nattinen is a strong two-way forward, he can play both ends of the ice very, very well. And he will also use his size and strength to help shield the puck from the opposition. And while not possessing the hardest shot, it is accurate which makes him a solid factor for the power play and since he’s great at face-offs he’s often relied upon for the penalty kill as well.

Top Goaltender: Peter Budaj (14 wins 2.11GAA .916 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Tyler Toffoli (4gp 3g 1a 4pts)

Despite starting the week off strong, they ended the week going in the opposite direction. But by all means, they still made those last two games a challenge for the opposition. They only lost 1-0 to Boston and 3-2 in overtime to the powerful Blue Jackets.

Tyler Toffoli had himself a great week along with Alec Martinez and Peter Budaj. Speaking of Budaj, he continues to show the NHL and the world, that he’s not done quite just yet. He’s emerged as one of the top goalies in the league which has taken everyone by surprise, but it’s been key for the Kings since Jonathan Quick is expected to be out for quite some time. In week 11 the Kings play Nashville, Dallas, and Vancouver. Three games they could very well win, but realistically, they’ll get four of the six points available.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Spencer Watson, Mississauga (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 6gp 8g 2a 10pts

Spencer Watson is a pure goal scorer who thrives on the one-on-one play. He has the ability to create something from nothing and single handily brings his team back into the game. Due to his speed and agility, especially from side to side, makes him a hard player to keep track of on the ice.

Top Goaltender: Chad Johnson (13 wins 2.30GAA .922 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Matthew Tkachuk (3gp 0g 3a 3pts)

Calgary didn’t have the best week 10, posting a record of 1-2-0 isn’t that fantastic, however, it was Brian Elliott who had the best week for the goalies rather than Chad Johnson. Forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Kris Versteeg combined for six points and a minus-three rating.

Goaltending needs to become consistent for the Flames to become a playoff or wild card team, they can’t rely on offense or defense every game like they have been, eventually, the goalies will need to stand up. And thing’s seemed that way with Chad Johnson taking over the net from Brian Elliott, however, he’s been slowly burning out. Players like Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg need to start earning their paychecks as well, cause they’ve been playing with a mediocre effort all season. Hopefully, things look up for the Flames cause week 11 isn’t going to be kind to the club since they have games in Vancouver and Colorado. Now both of those teams are having their fair share of issues as well, but if they can manage to get things together instead of Calgary, the Flames will be hard pressed for a win. However, the other side of the coin, if they continue their sloppy play and Calgary is the team that turns things around they could very well get all four points.

Weekly Prospect Profile: G Tyler Parsons, London (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 11 wins 2.46GAA .916 save percentage

Tyler Parsons is a serious goaltending prospect, most likely even above fellow goalie prospect Mason McDonald. His athleticism and agility, as well as rebound control, make him a potential NHL starter after a bit of time in the AHL of course.

Top Goaltender: Petr Mrazek (9-7-3 3.06GAA .899 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Anthony Mantha (3gp 1g 2a 3pts)

Detroit was expected to have a busy week with four games on the schedule. They got a bit of relief after an ice issue postponed their game in Carolina. The Red Wings didn’t have a very good week going 1-2-0. Their lone win was a 6-4 victory over Anaheim. Otherwise, this team struggled to score goals. The proof is in the numbers; after going 0-for-12 on the power play, Detroit dropped from 26th place to dead last (30th). It probably didn’t help that the penalty kill took a beating as well. They went 4-for-11 and watched their PK efficiency drop from 84.1 percent to 81.8 percent.

Things should get interesting between the pipes. Despite recording the only win in his lone start last week, Petr Mrazek had an ugly outing. Jimmy Howard continued to look solid in his two starts, but unfortunately, the veteran is headed for the injured reserve. He’s considered day-to-day and Detroit has called up Jared Coreau in the meantime.

Detroit had a pair of top performers over the last seven-day stretch. Anthony Mantha continues to heat up recording three points, giving him 10 points in 18 games. The other top performer tallied all of his points in the big win versus Anaheim. Tomas Tatar scored a hat-trick, giving him 7 points in his last 10 games.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Givani Smith, Guelph (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 30gp 17g 11a 28pts

Givani Smith is your prototypical power forward. The Guelph Storm forward is coming off 146 penalty minutes in 2015-16 and already has 77 after 30 games in 2016-17. His only criticism is that he can disappear for stretches from period-to-period, game-to-game. Yet, given his knack for scoring goals, Givani has the ability to completely take over a game in the offensive zone.

Top Goaltender: Tuukka Rask (16 wins 1.91GAA .929 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Dominic Moore (3gp 1g 1a 2pts)

Boston’s week 10 didn’t go so well, posting a record of 1-2-0. And scoring as well as goaltending pretty much invisible, the Bruins will have to step things up in week 11 to get back into the mix.

Boston’s scoring was non-existent this last week, not one player accumulated more than two points. However, four players combined for eight points and a rating of plus-three. Goaltending was also stagnant with Tuukka Rask winning and losing in the two games he appeared in. With that 1-1-0 record, he only posted a .903 save percentage, something that needs to be greatly improved for week 11. Boston has games against Florida, Carolina, and Columbus. In all aspects, the game against Carolina should be a win, but Boston could very well grab four of the six points available.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Jeremy Lauzon, Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 13gp 2g 9a 11pts

Jeremy Lauzon is a future all-star defenseman, he can do everything imaginable in the game. He’ll rush the puck, but also be responsible in his own end, he’ll score goals, but also stop them. His skating is also fantastic and has been considered for the Team Canada squad for the World Juniors for the last couple of years.

Player of the Week: F Viktor Arvidsson (4gp 0g 4a 4pts)

Nashville finished week 10 with a winning record of 2-1-1 despite having some key injuries to the team. While the week didn’t start out strong (two losses), the end of the week was much better for the Predators (two wins).

Viktor Arvidsson keeps showing the Nashville faithful that he may just be one of their top scorers. James Neal and Ryan Johansen also had great weeks pointwise despite being minus players. And Juuse Saros was absolutely fantastic, posting a record of 1-0-1 with a .964 save percentage and a 0.96 goals-against-average. Due to Christmas break, the Predators have a fairly short week, playing games against Los Angeles and Minnesota. Two games that will be a challenge for the team, but also two games where they could possibly squeak out wins if everything is clicking on all cylinders.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Samuel Girard, Shawinigan (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 24gp 5g 31a 36pts

Just when you though Nashville’s defensive core couldn’t get any better, you were wrong. They just seem to keep stacking up on top tier defenseman. And Samuel Girard is no slouch, considered one of the top d-men in all of Canada. Once he hits the NHL he’s going to be a threat. He can play both ends of the ice extremely well, and his speed allows him to do so.

Top Goaltender: Mike Condon (11-7-3 2.38GAA .919 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Zack Smith (3gp 3g 3a 6pts)

Ottawa had a perfect 3-0-0 week riding the hot hand of netminder Mike Condon. He only allowed six goals on 74 shots and recorded a 2.21GAA and .925 save percentage in those three contests. Condon has been extremely impressive since joining the Sens and now has seven wins, a 2.31GAA, and .921 save percentage in 2016-17.

The Senators managed to score 13 goals last week. Bobby Ryan, Derick Brassard, and Zack Smith each had three goals. Smith added three helpers to take home POW honors scoring six of his 14 points in 2016-17 over those three contests. Mark Stone, Chris Kelly, Kyle Turris, and Erik Karlsson also had three helpers on the week. Stone now has 26 points, Turris is up to 23, Kelly has seven, and Karlsson had a team-leading 31 points.

It’s difficult to gauge this Senators squad right now. With the prospect of Clarke MacArthur returning, you’ve gotta wonder whether this is a legitimate playoff threat. The only missing piece is a stronger blue line. So, GM Pierre Dorion might be wise to add a depth piece or two closer to the trade deadline.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Jonathan Dahlen, Timra IK (Swe-1)

2016-17 stats: 27gp 12g 9a 21pts

Based on pre-rankings heading into 2016, one could argue that Ottawa reached on this pick. Oddly enough, Dahlen was made a late 2nd round selection in my mock drafts last year. I had folks asking me if I really believed that Ulf Dahlen’s (former Sharks forward) son could go that high. If you need a little more convincing, just check him out on Team Sweden at the upcoming World Juniors.

Top Goaltender: Andrei Vasilevskiy (7-4-1 2.41GAA .923 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Jonathan Drouin (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)

The Tampa Bay Lightning had a disappointing 1-1-1 record with losses to Edmonton and Vancouver over the past week. Even worse, they lost elite netminder Ben Bishop for the foreseeable future due to an injury. With that, TB turns to Russian netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy, who has been arguably the better of the pair in 2016-17. He has seven wins, a 2.41GAA, and .923 save percentage. Expect the 22-year-old to do a bang up job replacing Bishop for the next few weeks.

On a positive note, Tampa Bay’s power play was on fire over the last three games. They went 4-for-12, bringing them up to 23.3 percent efficiency. The Lightning had a few performers over that stretch, including POW Jonathan Drouin. He capped off the week with a multi-point performance versus Detroit. Stud defender Victor Hedman also continues his hot play with four points in three games. If you include the three assists he racked up versus Calgary on Dec.14, Hedman now has one goal, six assists in his last four games. Rookie Brayden Point is also starting to hit his stride. His minutes are up of late peaking at 23:33 in Edmonton. He had an assist in that contest and followed it up with a goal and an assist vs. Detroit. Point now has 14 points in 33 games.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Christopher Paquette, Niagara (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 31gp 12g 15a 27pts

Christopher was a fifth round selection at the 2016 draft after a breakout season in the OHL. Paquette is a fairly solid skater considering his size, although there’s always a bit of room for growth. Give him a couple years down in Milwaukee to develop his defensive game and add a bit more weight to that frame, the Preds could have a steal.

Player of the Week: G Henrik Lundqvist (3 wins 0.98GAA .967 save percentage)

Just a week after backup Antti Raanta stole the show and won player-of-the-week honors, King Henrik made a statement in his return. He put up nearly identical numbers, giving the Rangers two straight weeks of below 1.00GAA and above a .966 save percentage.

The NYR had a solid week. They went 3-1-0 with wins over Dallas, Nashville, and New Jersey. Unfortunately, they had a sloppy end to their four-game stretch as Antti Raanta was on the losing end of a 7-2 blowout versus Pittsburgh. Special teams took a beating over the four-game stretch though. They went 0-for-10 dropping from 22.6 to 20.4 percent PP efficiency, and 4-for-17 on the penalty kill, dropping from 86.1 to 84.4 percent PK efficiency.

After making his return after a four-game absence, Rick Nash had an immediate impact scoring a pair of goals. Sadly, it sounds as though he re-aggravated the groin and should miss the next three or more games.

The only notable performer on the scoresheet was Mats Zuccarello. He had a goal and two assists in four games, bringing his season total to eight goals, 14 assists (22 points) in 35 games.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Tim Gettinger, Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)

2016-17 stats: 32gp 16g 11a 27pts

The hulking 6’6 220lbs left winger was projected by some scouting services to be a top-60 selection in 2016. Instead, Gettinger fell all the way down to the 5th round (141st overall). He’s put on roughly 20 pounds since I did my seven-round mock drafts early in the year, which should help him to use his big frame more effectively – something scouts criticized.

Top Goaltender: Martin Jones (17 wins 2.09GAA .920 save percentage)

Player of the Week: F Joonas Donskoi (3gp 2g 2a 4pts)

The Sharks had a great week 10, they went 2-1-0, Brent Burns broke Dan Boyle’s record, and they were able to gather a win over the powerhouse Canadiens. Also, forward Joonas Donskoi put up a respectable four points in three games.

Martin Jones was also dynamite on the week, appearing in all three games he also posted a 2.01 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage. Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton also combined for six points and a plus-six rating. They have a fairly short week 11 playing only two games, one against Anaheim and the other against Edmonton. Now both of those teams have been up and down lately, which is good news for San Jose who is starting to find their footing, cause they could very well go undefeated in week 11.

Weekly Prospect Profile: D Jeremy Roy, Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL)

2016-17 stats: 10gp 2g 1a 3pts

A gifted two-way defenseman, Jeremy Roy posses’ outstanding hockey I.Q which makes him aware of everyone on the ice and where they will end up, which leads him to often cutting off plays and passing lanes. His offensive instincts are just as well, being often compared to Duncan Keith. Roy is a very exciting player to watch and is capable of doing anything. His maturity is also at a level to where you would think he’s been a professional player for more than a decade.

Player of the Week: F Leon Draisaitl (3gp 1g 4a 5pts)

Edmonton had a fantastic week 10 going undefeated in the three games they played. But it’s not all that surprising, they have been surging all year and with defense finally fixed and scoring consistent as well as goaltending, it’s not a surprise to see the Oilers where they are now.

Edmonton has gone from bottom feeder to potential contender. They have elite level offense and top defenseman who play shut down roles. And let’s not forget they finally have consistent goaltending. When you have arguably the best player in the NHL accompanied with a few more elite level scorers, with fringe players who will also score goals, good things are going to happen. Cam Talbot was amazing last week winning all three games and posting a 1.92 goals-against-average with a .938 save percentage. The Oilers only play one game next week due to the Christmas break, and that game is against the Sharks. A game they should be able to win, but if San Jose plays to the level we all know they can, things could go in the opposite direction. However, if they don’t Edmonton could once again go undefeated, either way, it’s going to be a great test for the Oilers.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Bogdan Yakimov, Nefrekhimik (KHL)

2016-17 stats: 32gp 3g 5a 8pts

Bogdan Yakimov is a big body player, but that doesn’t stop the fact that he possesses amazing hands and great vision to help his outstanding play-making skills. And due to his size, Yakimov is very hard to knock off the puck. He’s not the most elite of prospects but his potential ceiling is still very high, and could very well fill a top nine role in the future in the NHL.

If Ottawa didn’t take the win Tuesday night, Chicago would have gone undefeated in week 10, however, they still finish the week with a very respectable 3-1-0 record. Forward Artemi Panarin was absolutely outstanding and goaltender Scott Darling was as well, helping Chicago forget about Corey Crawford.

How about Artemi Panarin, scoring nine points last week in only four games played. Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith were also fantastic posting six points and five points respectively, while three others combined for 12 points. It seems Chicago’s offense is firing on all cylinders. Scott Darling has also been doing well, something that needs to continue heading into week 11 as they have games against Colorado and Winnipeg. Those are two games where Chicago should be able to gather all four points.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Kyle Baun, Rockford (AHL)

2016-17 stats: 25gp 4g 5a 9pts

Kyle Baun is your prototypical power forward, he’s got the size and knows how to use it at both ends of the ice. And even though he’s big, he can also skate very well. If he continues to progress at the rate he’s going, he’ll be a top-six forward for the Blackhawks.

St. Louis had a respectable week 10 posting a 2-1-1 record with wins over New Jersey and Dallas, however, they did lose to Chicago and Edmonton. Patrik Berglund had himself a solid week along with goaltender Carter Hutton.

While Jake Allen got two starts compared to Hutton’s one, Carter did post the better numbers, a .914 save percentage and a 2.86 goals-against-average. Vladimir Tarasenko also had a four-point week but was, unfortunately, a minus one. On top of that, three other Blues players combined for nine points. Offense seems to be clicking at the right times but goaltending needs to start stepping up to make the Blues a consistent threat every week. Cause in week 11 they have games against Tampa Bay and Philadephia, if the Blues goaltending steps up, they should be able to gather all four points.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Tage Thompson, University of Connecticut (NCAA)

2016-17 stats: 18gp 12g 8a 20pts

Standing at six foot five, Tage Thompson is going to be a future top-six forward. He has the ability to win faceoffs consistently, he also loves to bring a physical edge to his game. His stick handling and ability to protect the puck at speed is tremendous due to his size, thus making him a serious prospect.

Player of the Week: F Eric Staal (3gp 3g 2a 5pts)

Eric Staal continues to show Minnesota that signing him was a great idea, he didn’t just lead the team in points this week with five in three games. But he also leads the team now with a two-point lead over forward Charlie Coyle, who also had himself a solid week posting four points. Both of Minnesota’s goalies were fantastic last week, Devan Dubnyk recorded two wins while Darcy Kuemper took the other. And in doing so they both posted a 1.00 goals-against-average while Dubnyk had a .963 save percentage while Kuemper had a .964 save percentage. Everyone needs to carry this play into week 11 since Minnesota has games against Montreal, NY Rangers, and Nashville.

The Washington Capitals had a mediocre week going 1-1-1 with losses to Montreal and Philadelphia. As long as they continue to pick up at least half the points during weeks with a tough schedule, the Caps should have no problem dueling atop the Metropolitan Division.

Both netminders saw some action last week. Backup Philipp Grubauer recorded the win allowing three goals on 30 shots versus Carolina. Starter Braden Holtby had a pair of solid starts against Montreal and Philly. Despite taking the loss in both games, Braden only surrendered four goals on 63 shots.

Several skaters had a decent week, but I’d like to point out one in particular. Andre Burakovsky had a slow start to the year in 2016-17 with 11 points through 27 games, which eventually led to limited ice-time. Things got so bad for the Russian that he spent a three-game stint as a healthy scratch. Apparently, he got the message though. He returned with a goal and an assist on Wednesday versus Philadelphia.

The Habs were facing a tough three-game schedule this past week and walked out winners snagging four of six points. They went 2-1-0 with wins over Washington and Anaheim, having only fallen victim to San Jose in a close 4-2 contest. Montreal continues to surprise folks with key players on the injured reserve. Many thought the scoring would completely dry up, but instead, they’ve almost found a way to be more productive.

Several skaters found a way to step up the past week. Rookie Artturi Lehkonen had a solid showing with two points in three games. Bottom-six forward Paul Byron added a pair of points, giving him 19 points in 32 games. Both Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty were standouts with a goal and an assist each, but the top performer was easily Jeff Petry. He scored a goal in all three games, including a pair of helpers versus Anaheim. Jeff now has four goals, three assists in his last five games. The recent surge has Petry sitting at seven goals, nine assists (16 points), +11 plus/minus rating, and 66 shots after 31 games in 2016-17.

Weekly Prospect Profile: F Will Bitten, Hamilton (OHL)

Scouts seemed torn on the small’ish center in 2016. Certain services had him projected as a late first-rounder, while others had him dropping as far as the 4th round. The Habs ended up taking him at 70th overall and may have found a gem with this young man. Will has drawn comparisons to Blue Jackets F Cam Atkinson.

Top Goaltender: Steve Mason (14-9-4 2.65GAA .910 save percentage)

Player of the Week: G Steve Mason (1 win 1.96GAA .931 save percentage)

The Flyers had their 10-game winning streak snapped versus Dallas on Dec.17. A couple of nights later, they were handed a second straight loss, although they managed to grab a point in extra time. They responded nicely on Wednesday with a shootout win versus Washington.

Philly’s brightest start was pending UFA Steve Mason. He was rock solid between the pipes allowing two or fewer goals in each of his three starts. In total, Steve only allowed five goals on 96 shots for a stat line of 1.59GAA and .948 save percentage.

Sadly, the offense was dried up over the last three games. Philadelphia only mustered up four goals and had just a single player record more than one point over that span. Jakub Voracek had a pair of helpers, adding to his team lead 35 points. The Czech winger is responding in a big way after a down year in 2015-16.

Our number one team from last week managed to grab at least one point in each of their three games. Unfortunately, the Penguins lost to both Los Angeles and Toronto, both games they should have won. Still, they finished the three-game stretch off with a dominant 7-2 win versus the New York Rangers taking a 2-1 lead in the early season series.

Marc-Andre Fleury had to wait 12 days (five games) to get his first start since December 5th. Despite taking the loss in extra time, Fleury stopped 41 of 43 shots in a solid outing. Appearances such as these may help GM Jim Rutherford find a solution to his goaltending conundrum.

A couple of players continue to tear up the scoresheet. Evgeni Malkin had two goals, two assists, surpassing Sidney Crosby for the team-lead in points. He now has five goals, 10 assists in his last 10 games. The other is defenseman Justin Schultz. He added three more points, giving him five goals, nine assists in his last 10 games. With 20 points in 33 games, that former free agent signing bust is starting to show some life long after being given a change of scenery.

The Blue Jackets had a perfect 3-0-0 week, and with that, reach top spot in our NHL power rankings for the first time in 2016-17. Give Columbus a lot of credit, they’ve had an outstanding start to the year and look poised to make a little noise in the playoffs.

You can point the finger at several different areas or players to help explain their success. One could argue that goaltending above all else has been the real difference maker. Sergei Bobrovsky continued his hot play from the World Cup of Hockey and now finds himself squarely in the Vezina Trophy conversation. In fact, he looks a lot like that goalie that won the same award back in 2011-12. We can’t mention Blue Jackets goaltenders without giving backup Curtis McElhinney some credit. His spot was threatened in 2015-16 after a horrendous season that saw Joonas Korpisalo take hold of the starter role while Goalie Bob was on the IR. Curtis has two wins in five starts with a 1.99GAA and .938 save percentage, some of the best numbers he’s put up in his career.

A number of skaters had an impressive week. Leading scorer Cam Atkinson continued his tear with five points in three games. That gives Cam six goals, seven assists (13 points) in his last 10 games. Brandon Saad also had a productive three-game stretch as he lit the lamp on three occasions. Saad now has eight points in his last 10 games and 25 points in 30 games so far. Lastly, Brandon Dubinsky had arguably his most productive week of the season with three helpers. He now has five points in his last six games.

Watching this super-skilled Russian fall to 65th overall in 2016 was painful. After all, he was a projected 1st round pick. Perhaps there was a Russian-factor in play, but either way, the Blue Jackets got a steal at the top of the 3rd round. At 5’9 174lbs, Vitali plays that small, elusive style the NHL is trending towards.
