The Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks square off in the back end of NBCSN’s doubleheader at 10:30 p.m. ET. Here’s how to watch via live stream.

Congratulations hockey fans. You’ve made it through another offseason. Wednesday, Oct. 4 marks the beginning of the 2017-18 NHL season. Opening Night features four games on the schedule, beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET. After the Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues game, NBCSN will air the second end of their doubleheader. This will feature the San Jose Sharks hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at SAP Center. Puck drop is scheduled to be at 10:30 p.m. ET, but keep in mind there will be pregame ceremonies, so there’s likely going to be a delay.

The Sharks look to open their season strong after a rough offseason. It saw them lose longtime forward Patrick Marleau, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. San Jose is an undeniably aging team, as four of their five returning top scorers are over 30 years old. However, they are still a very good one. Joe Thornton is still a great center, even if he’s no longer reliable for a point per game.

However, they are still a very good team. Joe Thornton is still a great center, even if he’s no longer reliable for a point per game. Captain Joe Pavelski remains a consistent 60 point per season player, which is harder to find in the NHL than many believe. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns is a one-man offense at times, carrying the Sharks for a large part of last season.

Goaltender Martin Jones is entering his third season as the starting goalie. He’s looking to rebound after his save percentage fell from .918 in 2015-16 to .912 in 2016-17. The Sharks will rely on him and an impressive blue line as they continue to adjust to being more defensively focused.

On the other side of the ice, the Flyers are a young team hoping to improve. Adding Nolan Patrick certainly helped. After the Steve Mason and Michael Neuvirth goaltending tandem went sour last season, the Flyers signed Brian Elliott. He will replace the former as he hopes to provide Philly with more consistent goaltending.

One intriguing nugget to keep an eye on for the Flyers is their first line. According to Daily Faceoff, captain Claude Giroux is listed as the first line left wing, with Sean Couturier as the center (as of Tuesday, Oct. 3). This experiment could work well for all parties involved, so it should be fun to see how long it lasts.

Both the Sharks and the Flyers rely on their top two forward lines for offense. So keep an eye on this as you watch the game. Also, the Flyers young defensemen are vital to their success. When Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere are engaged, they can be very difficult to stop. The same can be said for Burns.
