PHILADELPHIA, PA - OCTOBER 30: Brendan Perlini

The Arizona Coyotes knocked off the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime for their first win of the season.

Watching the game live, you could really see the jubilation on the face of the Arizona Coyotes as they beat the Philadelphia Flyers. Alex Goligoski’s game-winning goal with 15 seconds left in overtime sealed the deal for the Coyotes in a 4-3 OT over the Philadelphia Flyers. The goal ended a lackluster 0-10-1 start that was plaguing the young Coyotes’ season. They may have gotten in the win column finally, but they had to overcome adversity to do so.

Jordan Martinook got the party started early with a sneaky wrister at the 2:20 mark in the first period. Only five minutes later, young center Christian Dvorak put the Yotes up 2-0 with his first of the season.

Early in the third period, Brendan Perlini padded the lead on the powerplay, beating Flyers goalie Brian Elliot short side. Staked to a comfy 3-0 lead early in the third, one had to think there’s no way Arizona doesn’t leave without that elusive first win, right?

Things got interesting the rest of the way, as the Flyers battled back to tie the game 3-3. Sean Couturier lit the fire, quickly responding to Perlini’s goal with a power-play tally of his own.

The comeback was capped off by two goals in the last minute of the final frame. Jordan Weal and Couturier scored 38 seconds apart in the final minute, with the latter notching his second of the night to tie the game with only 15 seconds left.

“Here it goes again, the Coyotes are about to squander another good performance and walk away empty-handed.”

You could feel the game slipping through Arizona’s hands. Unable to muster anything on a power play in overtime, it felt like a matter of time before the dam was going to break. A point in the standings is nice and all, but it seems pretty sour when you haven’t won a game. With one final late push, Alex Goligoski pushed the pace up the ice. Dangerous wheels in Max Domi and Clayton Keller flanking him, Goligoski buried the puck off a nifty passing sequence.

With the first win under their belts, the Coyotes hope that they finally got the monkey off their back. A popular dark horse pick for the playoffs this season, things haven’t gone as planned so far in the desert. The 1-10-1 start is the first glaring issue, but there is more beneath. With newly acquired Scott Wedgewood starting tonight, Arizona has now had four different starting goaltenders in the club’s first 12 games. The defense has looked shaky at times, and the team is still young. Naturally, some more growing pains are to be expected.

Arizona has a lot of promise in its roster though. Littered with highly skilled young players such as Max Domi, Christian Dvorak, and Calder favorite Clayton Keller, there are reasons to be optimistic. It will be a deep hole to dig out of, but can this win spark some confidence for the Coyotes?
