According to the latest Oilers rumors, Patrick Maroon is likely going to be traded soon.

The Edmonton Oilers have had a season to forget. Thought of by many to be serious Stanley Cup contenders going into the season, they currently sit much closer to the bottom of the NHL standings than the top. With their postseason hopes all but gone, the Oilers will have to be sellers at the trade deadline to salvage a lost season. One of their best trade chips is winger Patrick Maroon.

It’s a foregone conclusion, but on Sportsnet 960 (audio link here), starting at 19:15, Elliotte Friedman discussed his thoughts on the forward, who will be a free agent after this season.

"“I think he’s going to get traded.  I don’t think there’s a doubt that he’s going to get traded.”"

Maroon will be just the tip of the iceberg. Other unrestricted free agents include Mark Letestu and Mike Cammalleri. However, Maroon is the big fish of the trio with 24 points (11 goals and 13 assists) in 44 games. He did extremely well with Connor McDavid last season, putting up career highs in a number of categories.

What Could He Fetch?

Seeing as how Maroon will be one of the better wings available, a second-round pick is a feasible return for him. However, he’ll have to have a strong month in order for the Oilers to be able to justify such a price tag.

As of Sunday, Jan. 14, Maroon ranks just outside the top 10 in points among pending unrestricted free agent forwards. Factor in guys who likely won’t be traded like John Tavares, Josh Bailey, David Perron, and Paul Stastny, and he’s one of the best forwards available.

With a wide-open playoff race in both conferences, this could bode well for the Oilers. That means more teams are going to be willing to pay the price necessary to get rental forwards. And Maroon’s one of the better ones out there.
