Here are the live results, updates, and highlights from the 2018 NHL All-Star Skills Competition
The 2018 NHL All-Star Skills Competition will be held at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. With a different format and a cash prize for winners of each of the events, that should make things very interesting. Some think it’s a glorified exhibition, but personally, it’s great to see players treat hockey like a game again. Even athletes deserve to have fun and show off their talents in a low-pressure environment. The skills competition provides the perfect platform for this.
All of the action begins at 7:00 p.m. ET. This year, there are three old events and three new ones. Two of the new events will look familiar, as they were a part of the team relay from the previous All-Star Skills Competitions.
Old Events
Everyone knows about the Hardest Shot competition. In years past, Zdeno Chara and Shea Weber have dominated the event. The last time someone other than those two players won the event, it was 2004. Neither of the two are in Tampa, so this year will feature a new winner.
Another holdover is the Fastest Skater competition. Connor McDavid is the reigning champion and he’s expected to defend his title. Nobody has ever won the event in consecutive years, so that’s going to be an interesting storyline.
Finally, there’s the Accuracy Shooting competition. It will be a tad bit different, but the objective remains the same – shoot the puck to hit targets. This year, participants will have five targets to hit and must hit whichever target lights up.
New Events
As mentioned earlier, two of the “new” events aren’t really new. They’re just individual events after being a part of the now-defunct relay. The Puck Handling portion will be similar to the relay event, except it will feature more challenging stations. Similarly, the Passing Challenge will be more difficult.
The newest event is the Save Streak competition. It’s for goaltenders only. Each goaltender will face a division. The objective is to save the most shots in a row. Each goalie will face at least nine skaters. The rules will be the same as a shootout.
