Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters and former Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter are early favorites to be the Flames’ next head coach

For the second time in the past three offseasons, the Calgary Flames are looking for a new head coach. Despite a disappointing season, thanks to a talented roster, they’re not going to have any issues finding a new coach.

Two early candidates have emerged. And both of them are pretty interesting. The Flames reportedly want a coach with NHL coaching experience and both of these early candidates have that on their resumes. Though the length of their resumes couldn’t be more different.

Bob McKenzie says Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters is likely done in Carolina. Whether he will opt-out or be fired remains to be seen. In the event Peters becomes available, he would reportedly prefer to coach in Alberta.

General Manager Brad Treliving has worked with him before. They were both members of the 2016 World Championship staff for Team Canada. Peters served as the head coach while Treliving was one of their co-general managers.

The Flames would also likely be able to provide him with a raise over the $1.6 million salary the last year of his deal with the Hurricanes would provide him with.

Also, in a recent TSN 1260 radio appearance, insider Darren Dreger revealed Calgary is open to bringing back former head coach and general manager Darryl Sutter (starts at 8:49). Sutter served as the Flames head coach from 2002 to 2006. He took them to the 2003-04 Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Dreger notes that ownership likes the idea of bringing Sutter back more than Treliving does. It will be interesting to see how quickly the Flames coaching search progresses. There are guys like Barry Trotz and Randy Carlyle who could potentially become available. Not to mention Washington Capitals associate head coach Todd Reirden, who was a finalist for the Flames’ head coaching job back in 2016.

Calgary made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2016-17, but despite high expectations, failed to do so in 2017-18.
