The Boston Bruins came together in Game 7 to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs and advance to the second round

Game 7 between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs was one for the ages. It featured a back-and-forth battle eventually won by the former 7-4. The Leafs came out strong, grabbing a 1-0 lead merely minutes into the game. For the first 40 minutes, any time one team landed a strike, the other would counter.

The Leafs entered the final 20 minutes up 4-3. However, Boston defenseman Torey Krug provided the tying goal 70 seconds into the final period and Jake DeBrusk ultimately ended up with the game-winning goal. David Pastrnak later provided some insurance with a goal of his own. Brad Marchand put in an empty net goal to ice the game.

Toronto had the chance to rewrite their script from 2013. However, it appears those demons will be haunting them for yet another year. Blowing a 4-3 lead isn’t as bad as blowing a 4-1 lead. But it’s still a terrible way for the Leafs to end their season.

Give credit to Boston. They came into Game 7 with no momentum. Patrick Marleau’s goal just two minutes into the game didn’t help. Even though it wasn’t pretty, the Bruins were able to get things done when they needed to. Tuukka Rask wasn’t spectacular, but he was good enough. The guys in front of him played well enough to make up for his mistakes.

Three Stars

  1. Patrice Bergeron (one goal, two assists) put together yet another great Game 7 performance. He had been rather quiet throughout the series, but he picked a great time to score his first goal of the postseason. Bergeron was once again asked to cover Auston Matthews’ line and once again, that line was virtually invisible.
  2. Jake DeBrusk picked up an early goal to tie the game at one. He also picked up the eventual game-winning goal. DeBrusk had a great series, picking up five goals in seven games.
  3. Patrick Marleau picked up two goals in a losing effort.
