Red Wings to sign Thomas Vanek

The Detroit Red Wings are expected to bring in Thomas Vanek. They’ve done this before and they’re clearly familiar with him. This deal will reportedly be for one-year and $3 million. While it’s a fair price for Vanek, one has to wonder why the Red Wings are doing it. They’re rebuilding and they have enough of a logjam of young players as is. Why bring in Vanek to make it even larger?

Grade: C. I love the price and term, but not for the Red Wings.

David Perron to return to St. Louis Blues

Today is a day of returning home, apparently. The St. Louis Blues are bringing back forward David Perron. He’s reportedly signing a four-year deal worth $4 million annually. That’s $16 million total. Perron is a solid top-six forward who is about as reliable as they come. He put up 66 points in 70 games with the Vegas Golden Knights last season.

Grade: B+. Love this deal for Perron and the Blues.

Penguins to sign Jack Johnson

The Pittsburgh Penguins will address their blueline by signing former Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson to a five-year deal worth $16.25 million overall. This is great for Johnson, who needs money and security. But for the Penguins? I don’t get it. This is way too much for Johnson.

Grade: F. We have our first F grade of the summer. Congratulations Penguins!

Sabres to sign Carter Hutton

The Buffalo Sabres have found their goaltender. Carter Hutton’s their guy. Reportedly, the deal is for three years and is worth $2.75 million annually. There were better goalies available, but this isn’t too bad of a price for Hutton.

Grade: C. Really don’t like betting on a goaltender who has had one good year.
