NHL Trade: Ottawa Senators, Sharks, Florida Panthers execute Mike Hoffman trade
The Ottawa Senators have traded forward Mike Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks, who then traded him to the Florida Panthers.
Early on Tuesday, June 19, the Ottawa Senators made a significant trade. They traded forward Mike Hoffman, defenseman prospect Cody Donaghey, and a 2020 fifth-round pick to the San Jose Sharks. In exchange, the Senators are getting forward Mikkel Boedker, defenseman prospect Julius Bergman, and a 2020 sixth-round pick.
Immediately after trading for Hoffman, the Sharks traded him to the Florida Panthers for multiple draft picks. It’s a bit confusing, so here’s a look at who gets what in the three-team deal.
Ottawa was backed into a corner due to recent issues between Hoffman’s fiance and Erik Karlsson’s wife. Karlsson and his wife have filed an order of protection against the former, alleging harassment, stalking, and cyberbullying. This lowered the asking price for Hoffman.

That’s unfortunate for the Senators because they could have gotten a pretty nice haul for him otherwise. But obviously, Ottawa had to trade Hoffman because there’s no way Karlsson and Hoffman could co-exist in the same locker room.
The Panthers are taking a huge risk by adding him. Sure, Hoffman’s a talented goal scorer and should make Florida a better team. However, there are significant off the ice issues with him thanks to his fiance.
Hoffman scored 22 goals and put up 56 points in 2017-18. He has four consecutive seasons with at least 20 goals and three straight seasons with at least 50 points. Hoffman has two years left on his current deal with an annual cap hit of $5.1875 million.
The Sharks are getting defenseman Cody Donaghey from the Senators. In 2017-18, he put up 16 points in 57 games with the Brampton Beast of the ECHL. Donaghey also made a one-game appearance in the AHL with the Belleville Senators. From the Panthers, the Sharks are getting a 2019 2nd round pick, a 2018 4th round pick, and a 2018 5th round pick.
Ottawa isn’t getting much in return. Mikkel Boedker bounced back after a rough 2016-17 season, posting 15 goals and 37 points in 74 games. However, his $4 million cap hit was a bit too expensive. Boedker’s deal has two years left on it.
The Senators are hoping he can continue to take steps in the right direction and be a productive forward like he was last season.

The Senators also getting defenseman Julius Bergman. He was drafted in the second round back in 2014. Bergman posted 20 points in 65 games with the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. In 2016-17, he put up 30 points in 67 regular season games and eight points in 15 postseason games.
