Fans have been waiting for an epic trade throughout the 2018 NHL Draft. It turns out they’re finally getting one. The trade involves the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames.
Bob McKenzie and others are reporting it’s a blockbuster trade. Initial reports suggest the trade involves the Canes sending Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin to Calgary. In exchange, Calgary is sending Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and Adam Fox to Carolina.
Here are the details, now that the trade is official.
Both teams were looking to shake up their rosters. This certainly qualifies as a significant shakeup for both sides. Let’s take a look at what each side is getting.

Carolina’s shipping out Hanifin and Lindholm. The former is the gem of this deal for Calgary. He’s a young left-handed defenseman who is coming off a career year. Hanifin was named an All-Star last season and was one of the few bright spots in Carolina. He set career highs with 10 goals and 32 points.
Lindholm put up 16 goals and 44 points last season for the Canes. However, he has never been able to quite unleash his full potential in Carolina. A change in scenery should suit him well. Both Hanifin and Lindholm are restricted free agents.
Meanwhile, Calgary is sending out Hamilton, Ferland, and Fox. Hamilton was acquired by the Flames back in 2015 at the 2015 draft. While he’s been very successful in Calgary, the team was looking to create some change. Hamilton and his three-year deal with a $5.75 million cap hit are heading to Carolina.
Ferland played most of the season last year with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. This led to a career year, during which he set career highs with 21 goals and 41 points. Ferland has one year left on his current contract at $1.75 million before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Fox is a promising young prospect who played well defensively for Harvard University last year, totaling 28 points in 29 games.
