The Philadelphia Flyers have signed goaltender Alex Lyon to a two-year deal

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed goalie Alex Lyon to a two year contract. Flyers General manager Ron Hextall made the announcement Saturday morning. Per team guidelines, the monetary terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Lyon was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of prestigious Yale University. He has been playing on an extension signed in July of 2017.

More from Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers goaltender made his NHL debut for the Flyers on February 18th in relief at Madison Square Garden. Lyon earned the win, stopping 25 of 26 Rangers shots.

It didn’t hurt that the Flyers put seven goals past Henrik Lundqvist, but Flyers fans will take any win against the Broadway Blueshirts.

Lyon spent most of the 2017-18 season with the Flyers AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

He backstopped the team to the Eastern Conference Finals with a 1.98 GAA and .944 save percentage. Lyon also earned a spot in the history books on May 9th, 2018 as the goaltender of record in the longest game in AHL history.

He stopped 94 of 95 shots faced in Game 3 of the Atlantic Division Finals. The 2-1 Phantoms win over the Charlotte Checkers went to five overtimes.

The Lyon signing all but guarantees the Flyers will have to part ways with one of their other goaltenders. Both Michal Neuvirth and Brian Elliott are still under contract for the 2018-19 season. Neither Neuwirth or Elliot was looked at as “the” goalie. Flyers fans have been waiting for someone to call “the” goalie since now-GM Ron Hextall played his last game as a Flyers netminder.

Lyon, while talented, isn’t the goalie Flyers fans have been waiting for either. The future of Flyers goaltending is Carter Hart. Both Alex Lyon and Carter Hart will get a good look from the team at training camp this year. While fans are sure to press to have the award-winning youngster in net for the Flyers on opening day, Ron Hextall has not been quick to press any of his young players to please the fans.
