After leading the Vegas Golden Knights defensemen in goals, points, and assists, Colin Miller has a new four-year deal

The Vegas Golden Knights offseason has been focused on keeping their own players around. One of their key restricted free agents going into the offseason was defenseman Colin Miller. The team announced on Saturday they have signed him to a four-year deal worth $15.5 million. His annual cap hit will be $3.875 million.

Miller was a key cog for the Golden Knights last season. The former Boston Bruins defenseman led the Knights defensemen in goals (10), assists (31, tied with Nate Schmidt), and points (41). 17 of those 41 points came on the man advantage, where Miller averaged over two minutes of ice time per game.

During their Stanley Cup run, he put up seven points in 20 games. Each of his three postseason goals came on the power-play. Miller proved to be a huge part of the Golden Knights blue line, averaging just under 20 minutes per game during the regular season and 19:08 per game in the postseason.

Vegas now has two of their defensemen locked up long-term. Miller joins Brayden McNabb, who is locked up for the next four years as well. The Golden Knights now must focus on Nate Schmidt, who becomes an unrestricted free agent next season.

They also must get something done with Shea Theodore, who is currently a restricted free agent. Vegas will likely try to keep both Schmidt and Theodore around long-term. The former was arguably their top defensemen last season. Meanwhile, the latter started the year in the AHL but eventually forced his way onto the NHL roster for good.

Miller is a good defenseman who has proven he can produce while receiving sheltered minutes. The Knights were wise to deploy him correctly and even managed to improve his defense a bit. Miller’s a good value at $3.875 million. This deal will take him through the rest of his 20’s.
