The Dallas Stars have re-signed center Devin Shore to a two-year deal worth $2.3 million annually in NHL free agency

The Dallas Stars have been relatively quiet during NHL free agency. Outside of adding Blake Comeau and Anton Khudobin on the first day of free agency, they haven’t been spending too much money. However, the Stars still had some RFAs to re-sign. Devin Shore is the latest among them, getting a two-year deal worth $2.3 million annually from them.

With him signed, the Stars now have 11 forwards under contract through next season. Gemel Smith and Mattias Janmark are still restricted free agents. Overall, the Stars have 19 players under contract through next season.

According to Cap Friendly, Dallas still has just over $8 million of cap space remaining.

The Stars’ relative silence during free agency is a tad bit surprising. They were granted a meeting with John Tavares, so clearly they’re a team wanting to win now rather than later. Perhaps Tyler Seguin’s deal, which ends after next season, is playing a role in this.

Last season, the Stars started off very strong and were in the playoff hunt as recently as February. After beating the Pittsburgh Penguins on the ninth, they had a 33-19-4 record. However, the Stars went 9-13-4. They couldn’t recover from an eight-game losing streak that lasted from March 11 to March 25.

Shore put up 32 points in 2017-18, which ranked seventh among all Stars players. His 11 goals also ranked seventh while his 21 assists were fifth on the team. Shore didn’t quite beat his 33 points from 2016-17, but he came close to it.

In 2017-18, he was more productive on the power-play. Even though Shore got approximately the same amount of time on special teams last season as he did in 2016-17, he nearly doubled his production (11 to six).

However, Shore’s even strength production fell, which is a little bit concerning. $2.3 million is very reasonable for a top-nine forward like him. And Shore still has quite a bit of potential. It’s up to new head coach Jim Montgomery to help him fulfill it.
