NHL Free Agency 2018: Vegas Golden Knights sign Tomas Nosek
On Wednesday, the Vegas Golden Knights re-signed forward Tomas Nosek to a one-year deal in NHL free agency
The Vegas Golden Knights have re-signed forward Tomas Nosek to a one-year contract worth $962,500. During the regular season, he scored seven goals and eight assists for a total of 15 points in 67 games. Had Nosek played in all 82 games, this would have put him on pace for 22 points.
Before being drafted by the Golden Knights in the expansion draft, he was with the Detroit Red Wings organization. There, Nosek spent most of his time with their AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins. In 176 games in the AHL, he posted 105 points.

After only appearing in 11 games during the 2016-17 season, Nosek was selected by the Golden Knights in the expansion draft. With Vegas, he got his first chance at a regular NHL roster spot.
Despite a relatively low-scoring season, Nosek enjoyed a successful playoff run. He scored four goals and two assists for six points in 17 playoff games. This may not sound like much, but it is more than a point every three games. During the regular season, he averaged under a point every four games.
Advanced analysis of Nosek signing
Like most Golden Knights, Nosek’s advanced stats look quite impressive. He finished with a Corsi for percentage of 50.25 percent at five-on-five. On most teams, he would have fairly impressive relative advanced stats.
On Vegas, however, Nosek’s relative Corsi was 0.25 percent. This means that had a very tiny positive effect on the Golden Knights when he was on the ice. That just goes to show how talented the Knights really are.
Additional analysis suggests that Nosek’s Corsi might have been increased due to the talented team around him rather than his own individual efforts. In his 11 games with a rather unsuccessful Red Wings team during the 2016-17 season, he recorded a disappointing 46.2 corsi for percentage, and a -2.7 percent relative corsi.
So, either Nosek improved quite a bit on his own or he had some help with it. With this information, it is hard to know if he has a positive overall impact on the Knights. It’s worth noting Vegas’ fourth line was quite effective with Nosek.
Conclusion
So, what does this leave us with? Well, Nosek certainly isn’t a point scorer, and it’s hard to know his actual effect on the team. Nevertheless, the Knights aren’t giving him much, and he seems to be okay with it.

For better or for worse, rosters need to be filled, and not everyone can be a star. Nosek is, at the very least, a passable depth piece to have.
