Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews surprised everyone with an Instagram post on Tuesday.

Auston Matthews took the collective breath out of Toronto Maple Leafs management and fans alike with his Instagram post on Tuesday.

The post in question sees the soon-to-be 21-year-old franchise centre out for a day of leisurely test driving alongside Toronto Maple Leafs’ goaltender Frederik Andersen and recent Calder Cup winner Adam Brooks. Matthews’ father, Brian, also spent his day at the race track.

This past January, Matthews signed on as a brand ambassador for the Policaro Group. The world-class automotive retailer happens to own Porsche Centre Oakville, where Matthews test drove a Porsche 911 Carrera S, valued at approximately $120,000 CAN, with a custom 34 on either side window as seen above.

Aside from clocking-in at least 220 km/h (136.7 mph), as evidenced in the video clip, the off-track Porsche instructor can be heard speaking to Matthews on the radio.

"Same thing as the other car, you’re not using the length of the track. You’re making that corner tighter than it needs to be."

With Toronto Maple Leafs training camp set to open on September 14th, Papi has about a month left in the off-season before embarking on a contract-defining year.

It seems likely he’ll forgo signing an early extension this summer, considering William Nylander‘s new deal will require heavy lifting on the part of GM Kyle Dubas and company as time ticks down.

Besides, he can up the ante with another highly-productive season, but whether or not Matthews eclipses John Tavares‘ $11M AAV remains to be seen. Rumours do, however, indicate that he would like to earn more than fellow countryman Jack Eichel and his $10M AAV contract, which is set to kick in this upcoming season.

On a side note, it also looks as though Auston Matthews has added some new ink this offseason. A whole sleeve, in fact, presumably working off of the original lion piece he got last year.
