The Boston Bruins have announced they’ve signed Daniel Winnik and Lee Stempniak to professional tryout agreements.

The Boston Bruins are getting ready for their preseason trip to China. With several players, including Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, not making the trip, the team has decided to add a few players to their training camp roster.

On Monday, the Bruins announced veteran forwards Daniel Winnik and Lee Stempniak will join them, as they’ve been signed to professional tryout agreements.

Stempniak will be trying to make his second stint in Boston, as he joined them at the trade deadline in 2015-16. With the Bruins, he put up 10 points in 19 regular season games. Stempniak has played for 10 NHL teams over his 13-year career.

In 909 games, he has put up 469 points, including 203 goals and 266 assists. Stempniak was last seen playing for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. In 37 games with them, he put up nine points. Stempniak will likely be competing for one of their fourth line spots or a role as a depth forward.

Meanwhile, Winnik was last season playing for the Minnesota Wild. In 81 games, he accumulated 21 points. He’s also played for the Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, and Arizona Coyotes.

With a relatively inexperienced fourth line, either of the two players could wind up earning roster spots with the Bruins. At the very least, Winnik and Stempniak will get an opportunity to potentially get another contract.

My guess is Winnik has the better chance of earning a contract since he’s proven to be a solid penalty killer and fourth-line forward. Stempniak is also coming off a very rough season. The Bruins begin their China showcase on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they face the Calgary Flames. They will also play the Flames on Wednesday, Sept. 19. This will be their second trip to China, with their first coming in 2016.
