Who are the NHL’s biggest underdogs as the 2018-19 season draws near?

Everyone loves a good underdog story. Luckily, the NHL is full of them. At least one team that didn’t make the playoffs the previous year seems to find a way to make the postseason. Last year, fans saw the New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, and yes, the Vegas Golden Knights as huge underdogs. Each managed to make the postseason and the Knights made a run for the Stanley Cup.

As the opening season is approaching, there are many teams that are looking to make a big impact. Here are the top five underdogs for the 2018-2019 season.

5. Edmonton Oilers

More from Puck Prose

The Edmonton Oilers are a team that has struggled to find a lot of success over the past years, despite having excellent draft picks. However, this team possesses arguably one of the best players currently in the NHL. Connor McDavid has been on fire since day one he stepped foot in the NHL. He not only can lead a struggling team but he also has some of the best hands and speed in the league.

The Oilers have been able to make the playoffs in recent times, but they have struggled to advance to a final since 2006. This team looks ready to show why they deserve recognition as a powerhouse team in the upcoming season. With players such as McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, this team looks ready to go the distance.

In addition, the Oilers have a dependable goalie in net. Cam Talbot had a substantial amount of wins last season and shows improvement on being successful again this season. These are why this team deserves a number five spot for underdogs among the rest of the NHL.
