NHL rumors: Dallas Stars and Tyler Seguin close to long-term extension
According to the latest NHL rumors, the Dallas Stars and very close to giving Tyler Seguin his desired long-term deal.
One of the top free agents in next year’s free agency class is Tyler Seguin. However, the latest NHL rumors suggest he won’t be hitting the market. According to Darren Dreger, the Dallas Stars are very close to giving Seguin his desired long-term deal.
It sounds like the deal will be for eight years, which is a given. If Dreger is correct, the deal will pay Seguin more than $9.5 million per year. It wouldn’t be surprising if he winds up getting an annual cap hit of over $10 million.

This will ensure Seguin won’t get to test the open market. Earlier this summer, the center expressed his disappointment that he hadn’t gotten his long-term deal yet. But it appears Seguin will be getting it and will be sticking around in Dallas for a very long time.
The Stars got him in a summer deal back in 2013 after a three-season tenure with the Boston Bruins that included a Stanley Cup in 2011. Ever since then, Seguin has realized his true potential as a number one center. With the Stars, he has put up 384 points in 387 games, topping 70 points in each of his five seasons with them.
Dallas needed to get this deal done, as Seguin is their best hope of having a number one center. The Stars tried to get John Tavares this summer, but after they failed to, Seguin remained their best option. This ensures they’ll be keeping their two best players (the other being Jamie Benn) around long-term.
The Stars still have a bit of an uncertain future. However, it’s now one which includes both Benn and Seguin, not to mention defenseman John Klingberg and forward Alexander Radulov. The Stars removed a potential distraction and ensured they’ll be in the Stanley Cup hunt for the foreseeable future.
Overall, this is a huge win for both parties. The Stars keep their core intact while Seguin gets his long overdue raise. He’s proven himself to be one of the most productive and efficient centers in the NHL. Now Seguin finally gets to be paid like it.
