The Boston Bruins have announced defenseman Torey Krug will miss at least three weeks with a foot injury.

Going into the 2018-19 season, the Boston Bruins have great expectations. They’re expected to make the postseason once again and build off of last season’s second round exit. The Bruins were already behind the eight ball thanks to being in the same division as the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

However, now they’ll be missing one of their best players. The team announced on Monday, Oct. 1, that star defenseman Torey Krug will miss at least three weeks with a foot injury. He’ll be re-evaluated after that three week period.

More from Puck Prose

Krug led all Bruins defensemen last season with 14 goals, 45 assists, and 59 points. He’s the power play quarterback for their top unit as well. Krug usually plays on the second pairing with Brandon Carlo, though he has seen time with Charlie McAvoy as well.

Zdeno Chara and McAvoy get most of the attention (and rightfully so). However, Krug’s an important cog to the Bruins machine, as he’s an excellent puck mover and he excels on offense, which is something neither Chara and McAvoy can do right now.

Offseason free agent acquisition John Moore will most likely take his spot in the lineup. Much like Krug, he excels as a puck mover. Moore isn’t as productive as him though, as his career high is just 22 points.

Matt Grzelcyk will likely take Moore’s place on the third pairing once he’s healthy. Currently, the young defenseman is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. Until Grzelcyk is healthy, expect Urho Vaakanainen to be on the third pairing.

If Krug is out for three weeks, he’ll miss eight games and will be expected to return on Oct. 22. However, he could miss more. That said, a late October return seems about right for Krug, though the extent of his injury isn’t known.
