One of the best lines in all of the NHL has taken a massive blow, as Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron is out for at least a month with a rib injury.

After suffering “a rib and sternoclavicular injury” last Friday, Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron will undergo surgery and will be out for at least four weeks. This will have a huge impact on the Bruins, as he is part of one of the most potent lines in the NHL.

In 19 games played, he has 26 points (9 goals and 17 assists). Bergeron plays over 19 minutes a night and is a huge part of the third-best power play in the league (29.9 percent). On the power play, he has two goals and a team-leading 9 assists.

He is one of the best two-way centers in the league and is a four-time Selke winner. Bergeron leads the team in points and his line has already combined for 72 points in 19 games.

With him gone, the Bruins will miss a lot of production, as Bergeron is the best playmaker on the team. To respond, they have called up Colby Cave from the AHL, who currently has 18 points (6G 12A) in 15 games played.

Cave is a big body (6″1, 200 lbs) who is stronger defensively, than offensively. He won’t replace Bergeron’s production, but the Bruins are hoping he can be a solid defensive center.

The Bruins have been hit with major injuries to major players. Zdeno Chara is out with a torn MCL in his knee for at least four to six weeks. Young star defenseman Charlie McAvoy has a concussion and fellow young blue liner Brandon Carlo recently suffered an upper-body injury.

This team is a shell of its former self and will look to it’s core to pick up the load. They will need Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak to continue their production, as well as see more scoring from their bottom two lines.

The Bruins have heavily relied on their first line (because they’re so good), but with Bergeron out, they’re going to need a total team effort to fill in the void. If the Bruins can survive this next month with a .500 record, they will be able to do anything.
