Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine became the 46th player to score five goals in a single game and the first since 2011.

Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine was selected with the second overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft. Since being drafted, he has done nothing but impress. Laine has proven to be a very special goal scorer, as he has scored 99 goals before his 21st birthday.

With just one more goal, he’ll become just the seventh player to score at least 100 goals before his 21st birthday. Among active players, only Steven Stamkos and Ilya Kovalchuk accomplished the feat. Wayne Gretzky holds the record with 167. Kovalchuk scored 108 goals while Stamkos scored 114. Laine’s 21st birthday is in April, so he certainly has time to shatter those two marks.

Throughout his career, he has been called Alex Ovechkin‘s successor as the goal-scoring king. On Saturday against the St. Louis Blues, the pupil did something the master has never done – score five goals in a single NHL game.

This feat has only been accomplished 61 times, including 56 times during the regular season and five times during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Laine is the 45th player to score at least five goals in a single game. He’s the first to do so since Johan Franzen in 2011 and just the third to do so in the 21st century.

With Laine’s five goal performance, he grabbed the lead in the NHL goal-scoring race. He began the evening with 14 goals and ended it with a league-high 19.

What’s surprising is four of his five goals came at even strength. Before Saturday, only six of his 14 goals had come at even strength. Laine also scored a power play goal, increasing his league-best total to nine.

He is now riding a four-game goal streak, as he has 11 goals in his last four games, including two hat tricks. Laine is also riding a five-game point streak.
