The Carolina Hurricanes are aggressively looking to trade for a top-six forward, according to the latest NHL trade rumors.

Under new management, the Carolina Hurricanes have been changing the way they do things. For one, they’ve been far more aggressive about their needs. Thus far, the Hurricanes have been unable to change their scoring woes despite getting a ton of shots on goal. According to the latest NHL trade rumors, they’re looking to change things.

On Thursday, Pierre LeBrun discussed which teams are being the most aggressive on the trade market. The Hurricanes were among them.

This should come as no surprise. After all, the Canes have scored just 67 goals through 27 games. That’s the second-fewest number of goals scored in the NHL and only the Los Angeles Kings (62 goals in 29 games) have been worse.

Despite their scoring troubles, the Hurricanes are still very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. They’re only one point out of third place in the Metropolitan Division. With their streak of playoff-less seasons approaching a full decade, patience is wearing thin in Carolina. So it’s not shocking to see them be interested in adding some scoring.

It’s worth noting the Hurricanes were quite active in trade talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs regarding William Nylander. However, those talks never came into fruition, as Nylander later signed with the Leafs minutes before the Dec. 1 at 5:00 p.m. deadline.

Possible Options

The Hurricanes are an intriguing buyer because of their surplus of defensemen. Teams covet young, controllable blueliners. The Hurricanes are overflowing with them, so trading one of them for scoring help makes a ton of sense.

Looking at TSN’s trade bait list, though it hasn’t been updated since Oct. 31, there are still quite a few intriguing options out there. Gustav Nyquist of the Detroit Red Wings is certainly an option, as is Kevin Hayes. And those are just the rental guys.

The Hurricanes, however, are most likely looking for players who are more than merely rentals. Tyler Toffoli of the Kings is an option, as he’s proven to be a consistent contributor and he has a  year left on his deal after this season.

It should be interesting to see what the Hurricanes do. They’ve been much different than previous Canes teams ever since Thomas Dundon took over.
