With injuries plaguing the Detroit Red Wings blue line, the Wings have recalled defenseman Brian Lashoff from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

With defensemen Danny DeKeyser, Mike Green and Trevor Daley injured, the Detroit Red Wings have decided to recall Brian Lashoff from the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Injuries have been the Achilles heel for the Wings this season and as a result, the Wings seem to be a revolving door for defensemen coming in and out of the lineup.

The newest addition to the Wings defensive core is AHL veteran, Brian Lashoff. The 28-year-old defenseman has played 123 NHL games in which he has totaled 2 goals, 11 assists and 57 penalty minutes. At 6’3” and 219 pounds, Lashoff is a big bodied defenseman that has proven to be serviceable for the Red Wings organization for 11 seasons.

With Trevor Daley set to be out of the lineup for a long period of time with a broken foot, Lashoff’s stay with the Wings could be a while. However, Lashoff will be competing for playing time with defensemen like Luke Witkowski and Filip Hronek.

Brian Lashoff is on the last year of his two year, $1.3 million contract with the Wings.  Lashoff has proven to be a workhorse for the Wings and their minor league affiliates (Toledo and Grand Rapids).

It is likely that Lashoff’s stint with the team could solidify a contract extension. There is no question that Lashoff has been a leader and a fan favorite his whole career with the Red Wings organization and the Red Wings’ community would love to have him back.

In the 2018-19 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Lashoff has played 26 games and has 0 goals, 7 assists and 21 penalty minutes.  With the Griffins, Brian Lashoff serves as an assistant captain and a veteran leader that has won a Calder Cup and has NHL, AHL and ECHL experience.

Hopefully, Lashoff can fill the role needed at the blue line and help the Red Wings get on to the winning track. He was scratched from last night’s contest against the Calgary Flames, but will likely play against the Nashville Predators on January 4, 2019.
