According to Darren Dreger, the latest NHL trade rumors have the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers working something out with goaltender Cam Talbot.

The Edmonton Oilers are a freaking mess. They’re finally doing something smart by listening to offers for some of their soon to be free agents. One of them is goaltender Cam Talbot. An interesting suitor has emerged for him, according to the latest NHL trade rumors – the Philadelphia Flyers.

This report comes from Darren Dreger. Nothing serious has happened yet, but the two sides are definitely interested in making something happen.

Talbot will be a free agent after this season. After a breakout season in 2016-17, he has taken a huge step back since then. The Oilers recently re-signed Mikko Koskinen to a three-year deal, which means Talbot’s time in Edmonton is likely up.

Getting anything for him would be good for Edmonton. After all, it’s better to get at least something for someone you’re not keeping around then it is to get nothing for them. Sure, the Oilers are in the middle of a playoff race. But realistically, they aren’t going anywhere even if they do make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

For the Flyers, their interest in Talbot makes sense. Rookie goaltender Carter Hart has been sensational and has put them back in the playoff race. Though a postseason appearance is still a bit unlikely, getting some insurance for Hart would be nice.

Talbot likely won’t cost much at all for the Flyers. Also, the two have a working relationship, as they have the same goaltending coach in the offseason. So perhaps there could be a long-term relationship there.

The Flyers need a backup for Hart after this season. Because Hart is still on his entry-level deal, this means he’s dirt cheap. That means the Flyers could, in theory, splurge a bit for his backup. Not like Talbot would command much, but if they’re not confident in Anthony Stolarz or their other options, Talbot would be a nice choice.

Interestingly, the Oilers need a backup after this season as well. So perhaps the Flyers would send Stolarz (who will be a restricted free agent after this season) the other way. Mike McKenna could be another option to go to Edmonton as well.
