After being called “a bunch of jerks” by Don Cherry for their postgame celebrations, the Carolina Hurricanes responded in the best way possible. By turning his insult into a viral t-shirt.

The Carolina Hurricanes are having fun with their postgame celebrations. Most importantly, they’re winning. This means the Hurricanes are having fun and doing it quite often. A lot of people aren’t happy with this. Perhaps the least happy person is long-time Coach’s Corner host Don Cherry.

Cherry’s opinion on the Hurricanes having fun is even worse than you think it is. It’s hard to decipher his rant, but he whines about Carolina are being a “bunch of jerks”.

Cherry refers to their postgame celebrations as “a joke” and warns they better not do it in the playoffs. He also claims broadcasters and fellow analysts feel the same way, but they’re too scared to say it. Now, how did the Hurricanes take this? Did they ignore it like a boring team? The old Hurricanes would have. But nope. The new Hurricanes are savage so they decided to turn Cherry’s “bunch of jerks” comment into a t-shirt.

Whether you like or you hate the Hurricanes celebrations, Cherry’s a bit out of line with his comments. First of all, he’s the last person who should be calling anyone a joke. Cherry has made a career out of wearing suits even Brent Burns would never wear and by being extremely eccentric. Heck, he’s often seen wearing silly hats and sunglasses. Cherry chastising anyone for having fun is a classic example of the pot calling the kettle black.

Secondly, his comments prove how out of touch he is with today’s society. Maybe the Hurricanes celebrations aren’t what you’d call “traditional”. But let’s be honest. The NHL’s traditions of class and a lack of creativity aren’t taking the league anywhere. Why not embrace having fun and grab more fans?

On that note, if the mere thought of a bunch of athletes playing a game having fun makes you want to stop being a fan, you weren’t a fan in the first place. Sports are supposed to be fun. Athletes are human beings like the rest of us. They enjoy having fun. Their celebrations aren’t hurting anyone. And if you don’t like them celebrating, there’s a simple way to stop them from doing it – beat them.

Thirdly, even if you don’t like the Hurricanes celebrations, guess what? The players love them. More importantly, the fans love them. For years, the Hurricanes have struggled to get attention. Now they’re building a winning team. They’ll be playing meaningful games well into March and perhaps even later than that. Whatever the Hurricanes are doing is clearly working.

It’s not surprising a team owned by Tom Dundon is doing things their own way. Whether you like the celebrations or hate them, you’d better get used to seeing them because there’s a good chance you’ll be seeing them in the postseason.
