Detroit Red Wings: Martin Frk Gets Waived
On February 13th, the Detroit Red Wings placed 25-year-old forward Martin Frk on waivers.
The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Martin Frk on waivers on February 13th after Tyler Bertuzzi returned from injured reserve. Frk officially cleared waivers on February 14th and was assigned to Detroit’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The 25-year-old forward has had limited ice time and opportunities to prove himself as an NHL regular after only playing 25 games in the 2018-19 season. In the 25 games Frk has played in, he has registered one goal, four assists, two penalty minutes and a +/- of -7. As for Frk’s entire NHL career thus far, he has played 95 games, scored 12 goals, tallied 18 assists and registered 16 penalty minutes.

Although Frk is getting demoted, he seemed relatively optimistic that he will be able to prove himself as a quality forward with more ice time with the Griffins.
He was re-signed by the Wings this past offseason to a one year, $1.05 million deal. The Red Wings drafted Frk 49th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Since being drafted and signed to a three-year entry level deal by the Wings in 2012, Frk split time between the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL and Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
Before the start of the 2016-17 season, Frk was placed on waivers and claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes. With the Hurricanes, Frk played two games before getting placed on waivers and re-claimed by the Detroit Red Wings.
Since being reclaimed by Detroit in 2017, Frk split time between the AHL and NHL. With the Wings, Frk tends to be a healthy scratch, but when he does play, he provides a gritty presence and helps create offensive opportunities.
It is clear that Frk’s time with the Detroit Red Wings’ organization is coming to an end. Frk is a quality player that has plenty of good years ahead of him and hopefully a team will be able to utilize his talent. If he cannot find an opportunity with an NHL team, it is likely that the Czech Republic native will test the waters in the KHL.
