The Boston Bruins acquire Marcus Johansson from the New Jersey Devils for two draft picks on Monday’s deadline.

Leading up to Monday’s deadline, all eyes for the New Jersey Devils were on Marcus Johannson being traded. Keith Kinkaid had been moved earlier in the morning, and it took just until after 3:00 Eastern for news to break that the trade was official: Marcus Johansson was traded to the Boston Bruins. In the immortal words of the Dropkick Murphys, he’s “shipping up to Boston”.

According to Bob MacKenzie, Johansson fetched an asking price of a second round pick in 2019 and a fourth-round pick in 2020 for his services. This is roughly what the Devils paid for Johansson when he was traded by the Washington Capitals in the 2017-2018 off-season for a second and third round pick. Johansson was the Capitals 2009 first round pick and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

Since arriving in New Jersey, Johansson has become a fan favorite due to a twitter account being made with his name and likeness that turned him into a Civil War general, providing in-game and team updates in character.

His production in New Jersey, although not disappointing, didn’t live up to expectations as it was greatly limited by injuries.  Fans expecting the trade had to wait almost all day for news to break, as any potential Mark Stone trade could affect teams interested and asking price.

With an expiring contract on a far out from the playoffs team, Johansson really turned on the heat and upped his trade value the past few weeks in New Jersey. He has 27 points (12 goals and 15 assists) in 48 games this year. He was held out of the Devils last two games for “precautionary reasons”.

Boston has needed additional forward help after announcing David Pastrnak was announced to be out two weeks with a thumb injury sustained at an off ice team event. Bringing Johansson to Boston may seem like an odd move, considering Johansson suffered a serious concussion off a hit from noted Bruin’s pest Brad Marchand that left him out for most of last season.

Although Johansson was able to come back for the Devil’s short playoff stint against Tampa Bay, he has been vocal about his negative feelings toward the whole situation.

Hopefully, all will be forgiven between the rivals turned teammates. The Bruins hope so. Meanwhile, the Devils should be content with their decent return.
