Former Detroit Red Wing goalie and Hockey Hall of Fame Terry Sawchuk had a biopic movie released on March 1, 2019 in Canada.

On March 1st, movie theaters across Canada began showing Goalie, a biopic movie about the life of Hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk. The movie about the Detroit Red Wings legend has yet to be released in the United States, but reviews have been fairly positive and say that the film focuses on Sawchuk’s depression and relationship with teammates, ownership, seven kids and his wife.

Sawchuk is undoubtedly one of the best goaltenders the hockey world has ever seen, but his path to success was not an easy one. The former NHL all-time wins leader for a goaltender with 447 wins, suffered from depression and addiction, which led to his tragic death.

Sawchuk died at the young age of 40 years old after a drunken fight with New York Rangers teammate Ron Stewart, in which Sawchuk fell and ruptured his liver. Although he died at 40 years old, he lived a full life with a tremendous amount of successes.

When Sawchuk broke into the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1949-50 season, he showed his grit and will to win.

Goalies at that time had to be a certain of level of crazy to play because goalies did not wear helmets and would have to block frozen pucks with little protection. However, Sawchuk was unfazed by the little protection and played a total of 21 years in the NHL (14 years with the Detroit Red Wings, 3 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2 years with the Boston Bruins, 1 year with the Los Angeles Kings and 1 year with the New York Rangers).

In his 21 years in the NHL, Sawchuk played a total of 971 games, posted a .907 save percentage, tallied a 2.50 goals against average, won four Stanley Cups and was a four-time Vezina winner. There will never be a goalie like Sawchuk to play in the NHL again, but the Goalie movie will take you back in time to show you what Sawchuk was like as a player and as a person.
