On Tuesday, the Boston Bruins lost newly acquired Marcus Johansson to injury. The injury looked bad from the start, but the result ended up being one that fans were not expecting.

As if dealing with losing David Pastrnak to injury wasn’t bad enough, another Boston Bruins forward was lost to injury this past week. Recent Bruins pickup Marcus Johansson left Boston’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes after a tough, yet legal and clean, hit from Michael Ferland. When Johansson left the ice, fans expected it to be bad, and when the news came out, it might not have been the exact injury they were expecting, but it still was a pretty bad one indeed.

When Johansson went down, it looked like he had suffered another concussion to add to his growing list of head injuries. Last season as a member of the New Jersey Devils, he suffered two separate concussions that kept him out for most of the season until a brief return during the team’s opening playoff matchup.

The second concussion came off a brutal and controversial hit by now-teammate Brad Marchand. Although at one time tensions ran high, and the trade was sure to bring a little bit of awkwardness between the two Bruins, it looks like they’ve largely buried the hatchet on the matter.

Instead of another concussion, the Bruins announced after the game that Johansson suffered a bruised lung. His injury kept him in the hospital overnight and he will be reevaluated by the team in a week. Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald reported that Johansson’s brief hospital stay prevented him from being in the Boston Bruins 2018-2019 team picture. A stand-in was used while wearing his jersey so at least his Number 90 will be seen.

When healthy, Johansson is the type of player teams can expect 20 goals and 50 points from easily, and that’s exactly the type of player he was on the Washington Capitals.

Even in his immensely shortened season last year he put up decent numbers considering the number of games played and went on a scoring tear with 12 points in 13 games this season right up until his trade to the Bruins. But his growing list of injuries have prevented him from contributing to greater team success.

Boston should survive just fine without Johansson. After all, he only has one point in the four games since his trade. And if Pastrnak returns sooner than later, sad to say but Johansson’s presence will hardly be missed.

Johansson recovering from his latest ailment is a different story. If the injury had been a third concussion in two seasons, well there’s little coming back from that. Everyone hopes Johansson the best and that he can come back from this injury and become the type of player that made him a fan favorite with the Capitals. Maybe he’ll get some good news and be back in a Bruins uniform in time for the playoffs. And maybe, David Pastrnak will be at his side.
