New York Rangers acquire Adam Fox from Carolina Hurricanes
The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Adam Fox from the Carolina Hurricanes. In exchange, they’re giving up two draft picks.
Adam Fox was an intriguing part of the trade that sent Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm to the Calgary Flames. He, along with Dougie Hamilton and Micheal Ferland, was a part of that return. The Flames traded him because they were worried he wouldn’t sign. Now the Carolina Hurricanes have dealt him to the New York Rangers for a second-round pick in 2019 and a conditional third in 2020.
Luke DeCock was the first to nail down the trade being close. Rick Carpiniello of The Athletic followed up with the Rangers interest. Finally, Larry Brooks of The New York Post confirmed the return.

The conditional third, according to Elliotte Friedman, depends on if Fox plays 30 games. If he doesn’t it remains a third. But if Fox does, it becomes a second round pick.
It wasn’t a secret Fox wanted to play for the Rangers. That’s probably why the Flames dealt him to the Hurricanes. Carolina had hoped to sign him after this season, but things weren’t going anywhere. Now the Hobey Baker Finalist defenseman will be heading to where he wanted to go all along.
To say Fox is one of the best defensemen in the world who isn’t in the NHL isn’t much of a stretch. During his junior season at Harvard, he put up 48 points (nine goals and 39 assists) in 32 games. Fox has impressed at multiple levels, including the NCAA and the World Juniors (2017 and 2018).
Immediately, he’s one of their best defensemen. Expect to see Fox getting regular minutes as soon as this October. The Rangers are reportedly negotiating his entry-level contract and should be announcing it shortly.
Fox is a right-handed shot who could slot in as a third or second pairing defenseman. There will certainly be opportunities for him to play with the Rangers.
Of course, Fox has options in case he doesn’t make the NHL roster. He could play in the AHL. However, it seems safe to say that Fox has played his last game at Harvard.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes did a remarkably good job here considering they had very little leverage. This makes the Hamilton and Ferland trade look even better, though obviously things could change depending on if Carolina can keep either of them around long-term.
