Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is known to make moves during draft
Expect the Calgary Flames to be among the most active teams on the draft floor at the 2019 NHL Draft.
It comes as no surprise that Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving could be looking to make a big splash at the 2019 NHL entry draft in Vancouver on Friday. Since 2014, Treliving has shaken the hands of some pretty big name draft picks during his time in Calgary.
Some of the players include Sam Bennett, Matthew Tkachuk, Rasmus Andersson, Dillion Dube, and Martin Pospisil, to name just a few. Though, for Treliving, the day of the draft isn’t all just handshakes and smiles. It means business too.

Over the last four seasons, Brad Treliving has been very active when it comes to trading players during the draft. He’s learned to hold a pretty good poker face while doing it too. Last summer leading up to the 2018 draft, Brad Treliving was shutting down all questions that pointed towards any potential deals involving his defenseman Dougie Hamilton.
On day two of the 2018 draft though, the unthinkable happened. A blockbuster deal between the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes was made, and both teams went all in.
The Flames shipped defenseman Dougie Hamilton, left winger Michael Ferland, and young prospect defenseman Adam Fox to the Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Noah Hannifin and Swedish right winger Elias Lindholm.
The trade paid dividends for both teams, but statistically speaking, the Flames earned the upper hand on this trade. Hannifin and Lindholm combined for 111 points in their new red threads, while Hamilton, Ferland, and Fox totaled for 79 points in Carolina.
Treliving stayed very quiet during this year’s trade deadline because he felt the Flames had all the
key pieces for a deep playoff run. Although, with the Flames poor postseason performance, that may be a wakeup call for him to generate some big changes within the Flames’ roster.
The NHL entry draft can be a busy time of year for all team’s general managers, so look for Treliving to be at the center of the trade talks, as he seems to be every season since taking over as GM in Calgary.
