The Dallas Stars acquired Ryan Hartman from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Tyler Pitlick.

On June 24th, the Dallas Stars acquired Ryan Hartman from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Tyler Pitlick. Hartman, 24 years-old, is a restricted free agent and will more than likely sign with Stars on a short-term deal. Pitlick, 27 years-old, is going into the last year of his three year, $3 million deal. His cap hit is $1 million.

Hartman, a former first-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, was a trade deadline acquisition by the Flyers last season, where he was traded from the Nashville Predators for Wayne Simmonds. In 245 career NHL games played, Hartman has 42 goals, 47 assists (.36 points per game) and 218 penalty minutes. For being slightly undersized, he plays a physical game and is not afraid to drop the gloves.

With the ability to be physical and produce offensively, Hartman makes a great asset to the Stars. Although he is now going to be on his fourth team in five years in the NHL, it seems he could be a long-term piece in Dallas. With Mats Zuccarello likely to leave Dallas, Hartman fills a vacant winger role.

The Flyers received a less talented player in the trade when they acquired Tyler Pitlick.  In 185 games played, Pitlick has 33 goals, 20 assists (.29 points per game) and 50 penalty minutes.  At 6’2” and 200 pounds, Pitlick has the tools to be a physical presence, yet he is an underwhelming fourth line player.

Seeing Philadelphia trading Hartman is a very surprising move given that he is a better player in every category.  It is likely that they are trading Hartman so they do not have to pay him a big contract and they are just keeping Pitlick as a cheap rental.

It looks like Pitlick will be playing on the Flyers’ fourth line with Raffl and Laughton.  Hartman will likely be playing on the Stars’ third line with Dickinson and Faksa.  Overall it seems that Dallas won the trade as they gained a player that could have a big impact on their franchise in the near future.
