Philadelphia Flyers: Nolan Patrick should thrive on third forward line
Usually, a demotion isn’t a good thing. But Nolan Patrick’s demotion to the Philadelphia Flyers third forward line should help groom him for success.
After posting 13 goals and 30 points in his rookie season as a 19-year-old, the Philadelphia Flyers had high hopes for 2017 second-overall pick Nolan Patrick. He entered the 2018-19 season penciled in as their second-line center. However, he didn’t run with it as expected, putting up 31 points in 72 games. The Flyers signed Kevin Hayes to take over the second-line center role.
Where does this leave Patrick? Most likely on the third forward line. Usually, a demotion isn’t good for a player. But for Patrick, it could be good for several reasons.

First of all, he will get to play against lesser competition. Third lines typically don’t face tough competition. Patrick has managed to tread water against tougher competition, but he hasn’t learned how to consistently produce against tougher competition. Facing lesser competition should help his offensive game develop.
Sean Courtier’s line should face most of the tough competition and serve as the shutdown line. Kevin Hayes’ line will likely serve in a more offensive role while still facing tough competition. This leaves the third line, centered by Patrick, with some potentially nice matchups.
Secondly, he could have some very strong linemates. Either James van Riemsdyk or Oskar Lindblom will be on his left side. For what it’s worth, the latter has proven he can be productive in a sheltered role. Patrick and van Riemsdyk haven’t gelled well together at five-on-five, but there’s definitely potential there.
On his right side, it’s anyone’s guess. It could be Tyler Pitlick, who is an interesting bottom-six forward who has put up decent numbers with sheltered deployment. Morgan Frost might eventually be there, though he’d certainly have to wow the coaching staff during training camp to be there on Opening Night.
Scott Laughton will likely see some time there thanks to his valuable versatility. Isaac Ratcliffe has a unique skill set, one that might remind Flyers fans of Wayne Simmonds. He’s a huge, skilled player who could thrive in a sheltered role.
There might not be an obvious favorite for the role, but the Flyers have options. They have prospects as well. Whoever gels best with Patrick will probably stick. It will be interesting to see who wins the job.
The signing of Hayes proves the Flyers don’t think Patrick is ready for the second-line center role. But a third-line role should be good for him.
