The 2019-20 NHL season will be a significant one for the Calgary Flames, as they are celebrating their 40th anniversary since moving to Calgary.

The Calgary Flames are getting set to celebrate a very big milestone this upcoming season, as the 2019-20 campaign will mark 40 years since the Flames moved to Calgary from Atlanta. They released a 40th anniversary logo on August 19th, and the logo has since been installed at centre ice inside the Saddledome.

This logo’s color scheme is the exact same as the jerseys that the Flames wore during their time in Atlanta during the 70s, and in Calgary until the mid-90s. This fuels the question – will the Flames be introducing the retro jerseys of red, white, and yellow and their new home and away jerseys?

Those retro jerseys certainly have a lot of great history in them. The Flames have been wearing them on and off as alternate jerseys since 2009, when the team celebrated 30 years in Calgary. They’ve had some great success in those beautiful threads too.

In their first decade in Calgary, the Flames never missed the playoffs. They won two Smythe Division championships, two Clarence Campbell Conference titles, two Presidents’ trophies, and to cap it all off, two Stanley Cup appearances that finally resulted in the Cup coming to Calgary in May of 1989.

The Flames teased their fans with the retro jerseys during the playoffs last season for all home games. Typically, when teams do this, it means change is coming in the following season.

We’ve seen this with teams in the past. Flames fans are surely hoping that this season is a big one for their team. In October, they will face off against the Winnipeg Jets in Regina, Saskatchewan for the NHL’s Heritage Classic outdoor game.

This will be a great way for fans to kick off the anniversary season, and although the Flames haven’t announced any jersey changes just yet, I expect the team will wear a white retro, as Winnipeg is considered the home team for this game. Both teams have played in the outdoors before though. Calgary played Montreal in 2011, and Winnipeg played the Oilers in 2016.

With the announcement of the Saddledome’s replacement building being ready in five years, this season will also be very bitter sweet. It marks the beginning of the end of a building that has seen some amazing crowds, players, and teams come through over the years.

Next time you’re in the ‘Dome, I highly advise that you take a look as some of the banners I talked about earlier. Flames fans better be ready to take it all in this season, and soak in the nostalgia of what this team means to its city, that has supported it through thick and thin over the last 40 years.
