Philadelphia Flyers sign Travis Konecny to six-year deal
The Philadelphia Flyers have finished off their offseason checklist after agreeing to a six-year deal worth $33 million RFA forward Travis Konecny.
After signing defenseman Ivan Provorov earlier in the summer, the Philadephia Flyers still had one key piece left to re-sign before the season – restricted free agent forward Travis Konecny. There were some harsh discussions on both sides, but the two sides have agreed to a deal.
The deal is for six years and is worth $33 million. This means Konecny’s cap hit will be $5.5 million for the next six years.

He’s coming off a strong season for the Flyers, during which he scored 24 goals and picked up 49 points. Konecny’s 24 goals tied his career-high, which he set during the 2017-18 season, and his 49 points set a career-high.
During the 2018-19 season, he finished third among Flyers forwards in five-on-five points with 38. Konecny’s 18 five-on-five goals placed him second among their forwards, trailing only Sean Couturier, who had 21. Since joining the NHL in 2016-17, his 2.00 five-on-five points per hour is second among Flyers forwards with at least 200 minutes, trailing only Claude Giroux.
To his credit, he has answered a lot of the questions about his durability. That was Konecny’s biggest issue as a prospect, but he has played in 163 out of a possible 164 regular-season games over the past two seasons. He has played in at least 70 games in each of his three NHL seasons.
Through three seasons, Konecny has 59 goals, 65 assists, and 124 points in 233 games. He’s also added one goal in six Stanley Cup Playoff games. The Flyers are expecting him to continue to contribute on their top forward line.
Konecny was drafted by the Flyers in the 2015 draft with the 24th overall pick. He made his NHL debut after making their Opening Night roster to start the 2016-17 season. Konecny has seen his playing time per game increase from just over 14 minutes per game in his rookie season to over 15 minutes last season.
This feels like a pretty fair deal for both sides. I’m a little concerned about Konecny’s numbers away from Giroux and Couturier, but both players are very productive with him on the ice. He’s a nice complement to that duo.
The Flyers are clearly banking on Konecny taking a step forward during the 2019-20 season. If he can find a more consistent role on the power play, stay healthy, and continue to improve at driving play, his deal could resemble a very nice bargain in a few years.
