Florida Panthers get sweet revenge against Avalanche in comeback win
The Florida Panthers managed to finish their month of October on a strong note by beating the Colorado Avalanche in a huge comeback win.
It was another late night for the Florida Panthers. While most were getting ready for bed, the Panthers were getting ready to hit the ice. Now, before I get into the action that happened on the ice, I wanted to point out some very cool tidbits about this team.
The first tidbit is that the Panthers finished off their October with a win percentage of .615%, which is the fourth-best start in franchise history. When they start off with a winning percentage of better than .500, they’ve been shown to make the playoffs.

Next, team captain Aleksander Barkov finally got the monkey off his back and scored his first goal of the season. Panthers fans have been antsy wondering when would be the night that Barkov would finally light the lamp and get his first goal of the season. It finally happened last night. He also donated $1,600 for patients and their parents in connection to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital which is awesome of him to do.
The last interesting tidbit is that the Panthers lead the league currently in games sent to overtime with six. A lot of fans have created the silly title of calling the team the “Cardiac Cats”. With all the overtime games in this young season so far, they’ve certainly lived up to that title.
Now, let’s get to the epic thriller of a game that had Panthers fans up late and cheering past midnight. The Colorado Avalanche scored quickly and made it a 1-0 game. However, the cats came right back as Colton Sceviour made the game 1-1 in the first period.
With 32 seconds left in the first period, the Avalanche scored once again late in the first period to regain the lead 2-1. No goals were scored in the second, but there were lots of saves made by both goalies.
However, the third period is when things started to get interesting. Nathan MacKinnon opened up the scoring for the Avalanche in the third period, giving them a 3-1 lead. But the Panthers that we lovingly call the “Cardiac Cats” showed us why they’re deserving of that title. Barkov finally scored that coveted first goal of the season on the power play to cut their deficit to 3-2.
Then with only a minute and a half to go in the game, the net was empty. The extra attacker was on the ice for the Panthers and Jonathan Huberdeau scores to tie up the game 3-3. The fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief. Regulation ended as Sergei Bobrovsky makes a stellar save as the horn sounds.
After regulation came 3 on 3 overtime. I’m pretty sure the consensus mindset amongst Panther fans was “Please end it in overtime. Please no shootout.” Jonathan Huberdeau must have telepathic abilities as he scored the game-winning goal only 29 seconds into overtime.
Panthers fans rejoice and all is well as the team currently sits in third place in the Atlantic Division, or shall I say “Catlantic Division”. Last night was all treats, no tricks and today Panthers fans are grinning ear to ear. Up next, the Panthers face a division rival on Saturday, as they square off against the Detroit Red Wings. It’s time to get another win and keep the good times rolling. Until next time, have a wonderful day and rest of the week. Let’s go Cats!!!!
